hey guys first time post.im thinking on getting one but im up in the air over which one to get.whats the ad/disadvantages of these rifles,i like the looks but i guess it all comes down to caliber/accuracy/reliability/ammo cost.im leaning to the mini 30 as i found case lot loads of ammo for cheap, but i dont know .anyone out there with some exp with these rifles?

Well I've only every shot a Mini-14 and don't have experience with the 30, I would be inclined to go with the 30 right now because of the cost of ammo.

.223 right now is $500+tax per 1000.
7.62 is $200+tax for 1120.

Not really hard to do the math on that one. Well I still get out occasionally to shoot my Mini-14, it's not near as often as when ammo was cheaper.

Obviously the min disadvantage to the Mini 30 is that most or almost all of the ammo you'll be able to find is going to be corrosive. Also, if you plan on hunting with it, good luck finding something in a soft/hollow point. Chances are that 99% of the ammo you will find for it is going to be FMJ and corrosive.

.223 = better selection, good selection of ammo. But it costs more.

Up to you, my man.

And P.S. - good luck finding anything more then 5 round mags for it. The 10-20-30 round mags look cool, but are hard to come by up here.

thanxs for that tt. how do you like your mini 14?.also i am under the impression that you cant use the 7.62 x 39 for hunting(i can reload my own sp/hp ammo if need be),and anything more than the 5 round mag would be illegal in that rifle.or would that just make it restricted?

Who says you cannot hunt with a 7.62x39. Many people here have taken deer with that caliber. I personally think it is fine within 100yrds. I have hunted in the past with my SKS in the thick bush, and its the same caliber. In my area, finding soft points is not easy, but since you reload you are golden.

The mini-14 is bad ass. There are many, many people here who will tell you they are ####.

I like mine. For a non-restricted gun that you can carry with you and plink with, they are really, really nice.

Anything more then a 5 round mad will not make the gun itself restricted, but it does make the magazine prohibited. All semi auto long guns have a 5 round mag capacity, maximum. Handguns are 10.

The only time you can get something with more then 5 rounds in a rifle is a rim-fire or bolt action. In either case it's as many as the magazine can hold. If you could find a 1000 round mag for a 10/22, you can legally buy it and use it, no problems.

just picked a cz 858 non restricted on cgn, great price, uses the corrosive ammo, but as said ammo is cheap enough to go plinking, and the caliber is consistent with the model of gun.

if going with 223, i would personally go with an ar 15, and many great examples on the cgn exchange.

as for corrosive ammo, if you google about its negatives, it all goes to stripping and flushing with hot water, before application of solvent and gun oil, for some with blackpowder experience from the old days, even before pyrodex, the extra step of running it by showering the parts in the bathtub is not troublesome or time consuming. i shoot blackpowder.

either choice as to the mini is quite fine, but imho, go with the 30 and pick up a crate of ammo at the next gun show in your locale. regards.

well all arrows point to the mini 30.if i can hunt with it thats a bonus, but i seem to remember something in the alberta hunting regs about min caliber and case lenth .i know the min caliber is .233 ,but i can seem to remember the min case lenth.
