I am thinking of getting a Mini-30 in 7.62x39. What is the largest game I should use this for and out to what range? Is it big enough for moose at acceptable ranges? Thanks

Moose no, deer at modest range yes, 150 yds. The bullet for the 7.62X39 is only 123 grains. It compairs with the 30.30 Win. in energy.

Deer and black bear Below 150m

NOT good for moose!

Won't get a better answer than this, I'd only bump the range barrier to 200 yards, which it'll do quite easily. It's actually much weaker than the .30-30, which generally isn't considered adequate for moose. .30-30 does what a 7.62x39 does but with a 170gr bullet instead on 123gr, which is a big difference.

I have a new Mini-30, and it's a superb carbine within its limitations, but it's not an all around big game rifle by any means.

I plugged five into the chest with a Mini-30 on an on-coming running 120lb. doe @ point blank - had to jump out of the way or get run over. She did die after 100 yrd dash with no heart or lungs. I re-barreled that one to .350x39 ADP and now they are bang-flops.

I got a nice 4x4 this year with mine at 70 yrds. One shot one kill. 123gr hornady dropped him as good as my 7mm. It's light and handy, the oldest finds it easy to shoot as well, good buy in my eyes.

Handload 150gr .311 bullets with 21gr of IMR 4198 and tilt all the moose you want.Moose are not hard to kill like an elk by any means..........Harold

Within 125yds, if you put the bullet in the right spot, it will drop anything that lives on the North American continent faster than a bullet launched from a magnum placed in the wrong spot! If bullet energy was the killing factor we who bow hunt as well, would never recover anything we shoot!

Buy what you like, shoot paper until you can hit your target every time you pull the trigger (from any field position and all weather conditions), then go hunting and show those "magnum" guys how it's suppose to be done!!!

An 7.62 x 39 is barely marginal on moose. If you can keep your shots under 100 yrds maybe. What happens when you see one at 200. Moose deserve better than a 7.62x39 unless you are a fantastic hunter with excellent patience.

I've shot quite a few deer with my CZ 52/57 in 7.62x39 as well as my Winchester 94 in 30/30.
They aren't really comparable in my opinion.
The 30/30 is pretty much a bang flop caliber in my experience if you place your shots properly.
The 7.62x39 on the other hand, the deer mostly didn't notice they were shot for a while even when hit perfectly.
The Remington sp ammo would "pencil thru" without expanding hardly at all.
I never failed to get the deer I shot with it, but they took a while to go down.
Just my experience, yours may vary.
