Hi all,
I'm in the reserves and am looking for a rifle to practice my shooting. I also will be shooting targets and coyotes with the rifle i pick.
Because were always in semi-auto i'd prefer something in semi-auto.
My budget is about $1600-1800 and right now im on the virge of going out to wholesale sports in winnipeg to buy a mini14 target ( thumbhole laminate deal) and a bushnell legend 3200 5-15 mildot. Will i need a 20 moa base? (what do they do?/can you mount on a mini14 action??) are they're any other options out there available to me that i wont have to wait months for ( ar180b etc...) i'd like a rifle that does at most 2 moa at 200.

Does anyone have experience with the target ruger and how accurate it is?
Is the harmonic dampener just a cheesy gimick which will become a hassle?
Is the gas system picky (on ammo) and prone to stoppages?
I'd really like to be shooting tomorow afternoon :cheers:
 
"...how accurate it is?..." Reportedly to be very accurate. Too much money for me though. Wouldn't put a 15X scope on it either.
 
Tons of posts/threads on the mini 14 target. By all accounts it is much more accurate than traditional minis. Sub inch seems to be the word on the street.

One thing though, the triggers suck.
I took mine to a gunsmith and had the the trigger worked on. The wait was long but it was worth it. The trigger still has a fair bit of travel but it's smooth without creep and the let off is crisp.

Mine is scoped with a Falcon 4-14x 44mm FFP. I haven't shot it yet. I'm just waiting for no wind and the temperatures to warm up a bit. Tomorrow may be looking good to go test it out.
 
I just got mine last week.
Shoots great. I really like the Hugue rubber molder stock.
I scoped it with Bushnell 3200 3x9x50.
I will be toying with the dampner today. Out of the box, it shoots very nice groups.
I shoot 55gr reloads. I am very satisfied with the rifle.
 
Well 20 km/h winds today. Snowing and -24 with wind chill. Looks like it'll have to be next weekend. :(
 
got it today guys (thumbhole stock one) with as i stated a 3200 5-15 mildot :) not to shabby of a set up for my first rig. grabbed 200 rounds of winchester whitebox with it can't wait until tomorow evening gonna rattle off a couple boxes.

anyone know what is the correct magnification to estimate range with my mildots?
the manual i had said its 12x for the 6-24 but nothing about the 5-15??
also anyone know how to mount a bipod on this bad boy?
 
Mini-14

The proper magnification for the Bushnell 5X15 with mil-dot is 10X for ranging.To mount a harris bipod you need to purchase an adaptor piece that attachs to the front of the gas block-also made by harris. The next thing you may want to do is change out the gas block bushing so you don't send brass flying two benches down. It also cuts down on the hard hammering of the action which isn't easy on anything. A three piece bushing kit is about $20 US.
 
here's my mini report. well i went down to some local crown land sand pits about 45mins from my house with three winchester white boxes and about 6 bottles in tow, i set em up and counted out my paces which i no equal 100m from my military nav course. picked a fist sized rock and got my gf to watch
poi did a rough zero and smashed all the bottles one after the other :D
i never ended up using all three boxes (one left untouched) it wasnt fun shooting after i smashed all the the bottles in about ten seconds.

to be honest i just wanted to blast away a bit with my first and brand new rifle

cant wait to get to a real range to do a real zero and throw down some groups

any links to the menitoned parts? (buffer kit and bipod and adaptor??)
 
The dampner is a stupid gimmick. Buy a regular mini 14 and get a barrel put on it. The target ain't worth the extra money just for a rubberized stock and a barrel that ain't actually heavy (it tapers way down under the stock) We took my bud's to more than one gunsmith to get a barrel job and to have it "accurized". They both polietly declined saying there is nothing they can do to make it any better than it already is in the "target" configuration. Now i'm not crapping on the mini 14, just saying buy a stock one and pimp as necessary.

Costs more money than just buying the target version. Plus reports show that the target versions shoot very well as is.

They use Harmonic dampeners on small bore bench rest rigs. Plus range reports have shown that it makes a difference. :confused: . So I don't know if I'd call it a gimmick just yet.

The reports show that they can shoot. If they couldn't you'd see it very quickly on the net. Instead you see people confusing the regular one with the target model. The people with the target models seem to have had decent accuracy.

I did however take mine to a gunsmith to have the trigger worked on. The stock trigger was pretty terrible.

Hopefully mine will be a shooter. For the price it's tough to beat.

if you actually read my post you'd know i got the rifle a couple
days ago so recommending i not buy it is a little late haha
and i'm sure if you brought any reasonable gunsmith the rifle and
the right amount of money they are not going to politely decline
tightening it up
 
my target model shoots .5 inch groups at 100m with 69gr nosler j4 hand loads never touched the muzzel weight just built a load like normal.

I've heard of more than a few shooting .5 moa. That's actually one of the main reasons I was convinced to get one. Plus stainless steel semi auto, .5 moa possible, not restricted and under 1K. Ardent summed it up in the original thread on the mini 14 target.

Also on the advice of a fellow CGN member I went with the laminate version. I looked at the Hogue model at a gunstore and had to agree that there was too much flex at least for my tastes. The Laminate stock actually seems very good for the Mini 14.
