I'm in the mood for something new. One that has come to mind is a mini14. I'd like to dress it up, a bit. Folding stock, rail mount, scope. But do they shoot? I know not to expect varmint tack driver accuracy, but I'd like to hear from the guys that have them. Love 'em or hate 'em, I don't care, just tell me about them. Thanks in advance boyz, I know I've come to the right place.

Have had mine for many years....no tack-driver, but fun plinker. Handy and short to carry around the ranch, on quad or truck.
Apparently Ruger has upgraded their manufacturing process, and new ones are supposed to have much better accuracy potencial.

I've had one for about a year now, I don't find it that bad on accuracy, its not better then a bolt by anymeans but I coul hit a yote at 150 to 200 yards with it. Well 200 on a good day. I just bought a sage stock off EE for it with a telescoping and folding stock. There are things you can do to make it more accurate, check the gunsmithing forms for that. I used to have both the mini 14 and the M14 and I sold the M14 and stayed with the mini. All in all its a reliable and very fun gun to own.

I've shot a few but never owned one. They all seemed to be reliable, but as said not overly accurate - at least when compared to a bolt gun. At one time I considered getting a Mini-14 built as there were some custom shops claiming .5 MOA, but there were always other projects which took priority.

Had one. Minute of dinner plate at 100 yards. Lousy trigger. It did always go bang with Ruger factory mags.

There are two happy days in the life of a Mini 14 owner. The day he gets his Mini and the day he sells it.

Mini 14's

The older Mini's worked but not that accurate. By series 188 they put better barrels on them and they shoot better but not a bench rest gun by any means. I think the newest Mini's have improved again, but haven't had the opportunity to try one out.

Too much money for poor accuracy. The jury is still out on the accuracy of the new 'Target' version. It's too expensive too. MSRP is $995US.

I've had one for a few years, it's a great little gun. Never had a malfunction and it puts 3 rounds into 1 1/4" groups with my handloads. Good non-restricted semi-auto rifle.

I had one years ago, bought it just so I could shoot cheap surplus ammo. I didn't like it. Had it for about 10 months and traded it on 2 other rifles. I then went and bought my AR, prior to all this C68 crap. The AR is a better rifle IMHO.

I had one, shot it, handloaded for it, shot it some more and sold it. It worked everytime but didn't shoot well enough for anything I need a .223 for. The good part is I got it real cheap and sold it for 3 times what I paid for it.

Mine would do that too.

At 25 yards.

I've given all comments thus far some serious thought, but the one above pretty well spells it out for me. Minute of dinner plate accuracy, and a lousy trigger...oh that sounds like a lot of fun  . I'm a bit of an accuracy nut, tweaking, bedding, working up loads to squeeze them all into that less than 1 moa tolerance. Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll pass on the mini14, on to something else, in a varminter. I have this nasty desire to hit what I point at.

If your into tweaking rifles to get them to shoot, then I suggest you check this website http://perfectunion.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=86 before deciding that the Mini isn't what you want. I've done all the iexpensive tweaks to my Ranch Rifle and it shoots fine. I'm not sure if you will reach your MOA goals with a Mini but I'm sure it will be fun to try.
