Goodday gents.

I'm not a regular here in the BP section, and don't really know where to start looking, so I'll ask.

Can anyone provide me with info regarding the legality of a small (desktop decoration type) operational black powder cannon?

IE, if someone with a lathe was bored and had some spare brass lying around, is it legal to make a little bitty baby cannon 4-5" long, that can fire?

This is mostly a decorative idea, but hey, it's a cannon, they're supposed to shoot!

Comments/questions/links/laws appreciated!

Thanks,

NS

Here is mine, 10" x 50 cal barrel. They are becoming very popular and they are a hoot.

Ok, great pics guys, but where does an itty-bitty cannon fall under the law?

If I built one, is it a fire-arm?

Do I need to discharge it at a range, or can I plink at my shed with some marbles from the back porch?

(KIDDING)

Anyone have the chapter and verse on them?

I believe that it is a matchlock or a signaling device, both exempt from registration . If you use it to rob a bank to often, you would be charged with a firearms offense. Essentially anything used as a firearm for a criminal act, becomes a firearm for the purposes of legal penalty.

Almost forgot, could also be a replica of an antique and as such is legal where a replica of a modern gun is not.

I don't believe you have to register cannons with the cfc as Matchlocks are considered antiques and cannons are similarly fired with a fuse but looking at the cover all laws the liberals came up with you may have to register yourself with the government if you have one over .50 bore (12.7 mm) as they could be declared a controlled item ,and it looks like legally you have to do that anyways if you own a rifle:mad: ,shotgun:mad: or handgun:mad: .I'm waiting to hear what our cpc MPs have to say about this in the next few days.

If you make a cannon with too short a barrel, will you be charged with possession of a restricted firearm, unsafe storage, etc.?

For note ,i wasn't referring to the Canadian firearms center and their definitions as the problem, there is another government agency stepping up to bat now to control you evil persons and they have their own set of regulations.
