Sorry if this has been asked already but I searched and couldn't find anything. Without getting into the crazy details of this particular rifle and the fact that it can fire separately from the stock; what is the minimum length that you could legally cut down a factory 10 22 barrel to? I am aware that a 12 inch barrel is legal, and an 8 inch barrel would give you an overall length of about 28 inches. Are there any other subtleties within our laws that would prevent someone from doing this? The reason I ask is that I am interested in converting a 10 22 into a light and highly packable survival rifle. Thanks.

You could cut the barrel to 18". You cannot cut the barrel to any length shorter than 18".

What you can do - if you want an 8" barrel - is buy a new barrel that was manufactured at that length.

Try either Dlask or Bits of Pieces.

Just buy a barrel thats 4.14 inchs long for shortest befor going into prohib.. it might make it restricted instead though :p

Similar question, that will probably be pretty stupid but I have to ask, If I were to buy a new barrel for my 10/22, what is the shortest length that barrel can be before it is no longer consitered non-restricted.

It goes by Over All Length (OAL) of the gun which must be at least 26" in it's shortest configuration so if you had a really long stock you could theoretically have a 1" barrel. I measure mine at about 19" from the butt to the front of the reciever so I could put on an 7.5" barrel and still be non-restricted. Did that help?

I'm building a "micro socom II " with a base model 10/22 , utg quad rail foreend ,12.5" dlask barrel and magpul AFG. Aim to build it at exactly 26" ( chop the stock if I have to ). It's gonna be a cool back pack gun.

One more question.I know u can't cut the stock barrel down to less than 18", but, What if I buy a used sr 22 16" barrel ( already less than 18") and cut it to 11" and mount it on my 10/22. Over all length is still gonna be well over 26" is that legal? I mean the barrel cutting part.

you cant cut the barrel to less than 18". the 16" barrel is already under 18" so you cannot cut it either. The shortest you can cut a barrel on a rimfire or manually operated action centerfire is 18", to go shorter the barrel must be mfr'd at that length.

That's awesome, I'll have to see if he can make one for me once I get the stock I want. Does anyone know where to buy a Hogue stock in canada or would it be best to just order through rimfire sports? I know frontier firearms carries them but they say out of stock on their website.

I think I have to disagree to a small degree with this. If you measure to the front of the receiver and then subtract that from 26 inches a barrel of the resulting length would be too short. About 1 inch usually of the barrel is recessed into the action so I would do what is recommended here but add 1 inch to the difference and that should keep it legal.

I think he got my point;). It depends on whose barrel it is anyways, some companies measure from the shoulder to muzzle some from the chamber end to muzzle. I was actually going to add that that measurement was barrel only not chamber but I figured most readers would realize that. I doubt he is finding a 7.5-8.5" barrel anyways without getting Dlask to one off one for him.

what if your barrel is shorter than the front of the stock. Do you need to measure it to the tip of the barrel or can you just measure it to the tip of the stock. So from butt of the stock to the tip. Where does barrel length even play a roll in it? If a Tapco stock is 27" 0/A then can i put a 6" barrel in it even though it would be recessed in the stock and maintain unrestricted? Some say all the matters is O/A length and others start saying that you need to measure from the barrel. Well what is it?
