If i buy a cheap SxS shotgun how short can I get the barrell cut down to? and can I cut off the butt just to keep the grip? I will be using it as a camp gun.
You can cut the barrel to 18", no shorter. If you cut the grip off, you'd first have to measure to see if it would still be over the needed 26" OAL length.
You can buy manufactured barrels at under 18" for non semi auto shotguns and they remain non restricted. You can't have a longer barrel cut, but you can buy barrel that came that way. Makes sense, no? The whole pistol grip thing is a little iffy right now. Right now you're safest bet is to remain over 26" OAL.
Nine,
I noticed shotguns with Dlask 8.5"bbls/Remy receivers with both regular stock and pistol grip being sold (as a package). I'm guessing the law has changed on OAL, because the setup with pistol grip is way shorter than 26"!
The whole thing is about how the law is worded. The going under 26" OAL by "folding, telescoping or any other means." Apparently the pistol grip does not fit in those categories, but it has not been officially challenged.
I wouldnt be first if a 8.5 inch barelled shotgun with pistol grip is unrestricted, if ever it was changed to restricted then id get rid of it or get it registered as restricted.

I don't know if I'm going to be the first but I'm picking up one of these puppies(dlask 8.5/remy receiver with reg stock & pistol grip) tomorrow. I forgot to find out if they were restricted when I put one on hold. If all goes well, I'll post some pics.
Thanks for the info, Nine!
