trying to make some varmint bullets for my 270. What is the least amount of bullet you would have in the case? i seem to remember at least 2/3 the diameter, but couldn't find it anywhere in my books. also if this little amount is used, would it make sense to crimp? i'm using sierra 90gr. HP, which do not have a cannelure, but i've got a lee factory crimp die, which says it will make it's own groove. what are your opinions on doing this? not sure how much i like distorting a bullet, when the maker didn't design it that way.

I'm in the same boat here. Looking for a decent OAL for 110gr V-max in my .270. Hodgson's says 3.25" but my split case ( full length resized first) appears to give me more like 3.235"as a max for it. Any ideas or should I just quit worrying stuff them all in at 3.22"?

well the distance to the lands is 3.200", which is what the sierra manual states for the OAL, but that only leaves .185 of the bullet in the case. will probably try seating them to 3.190". I was wondering if the crimp would help with that little bullet in the neck?

Ive never had issues with the Sierra manual OAL's, that being said try the suggested OAL and check for neck tension. Your gun will probably shoot better with less freebore. No idea how much throat you have on that rifle so testing is in order.

Varmint bullets are designed to jump a good distance, if needed. 3.190" should be fine. Don't crimp, adjust with neck tension.
