"minimum" calibre at a distance

I shop in the same general area as you... where are you getting White Box (40 rounds @ 3600 fps) for under $10???

Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart always seem to have the 20 round packs when I go in, I have not seen the 40 round packs here. I reload so usually only buy them for someone else to shoot or to top up my brass if I am short a round or two. I really don’t like people I don’t know shooting my reloads at a club event.

I agree with the .223 crowd, thats why I just bought one. (Savage 12btcss). .223 is the 30-06 of the .22 centerfires for cheap and widely available factory ammo, and usually available in a 1 in 9" or tighter twist to stabilize heavier bullets, making it very versatile should one desire long range capabilities. Most of the. 204 / 22-250 and other options I found were 1 in 12" or 1 in 14" twist that work well for lighter bullets at high speeds, but loose velocity and energy at longer ranges due to the lower ballistic co-efficiency of the lighter bullets.

A 1 in 10 twist triple deuce would be awesome! Wish most came with a tighter twist, but 40 to 50 grainers work well for what most people use the little plinkers for.

Nothing against the .223, but can I just put in a vote for the .22WMR ? I shoot mine at 200 yds. all the time. And, the ammo is pretty cheap.

Except there is 18" of drop from 100 to 200 yards with the wmr. Accuracy from everyone I have talked to isnt all that great either. I get almost the same group size at 200yards with my 223 as the wmr at 100yards

Whatever you shoot, keep the brass (centerfire only). If you get into reloading, then you'll have a supply. If not, then you can sell your once-fired brass and put it towards more ammo. A zipper sandwich bag should hold 100 empties.

If you're shooting surplus, don't keep the steel cases. They aren't reloadable.

yeah. So far I try to go to the range once a week. But its a learning process; and I've been learning as I go about zero'ing in the sights,
proper technique and stance. I've yet to see anybody else there when I go (to the range). I think of it this way as well, if I could have
one "low velocity" rifle and one "high velocity" which would they be? It seems the best two options are .22lr and .223, with proper ammo.

The .204 as two-dogs mentioned aren't as widely available either. Maybe its the 2am talking, but I couldn't find them on the local hardware store's website.

I installed silverlight but the winchester site is still not loading. I might wait until tomorrow to try again.

Just a question, where did you come up with the 150 yard, 137 meter max range for the 22LR? I regularly shoot golf balls at 200 yards ith a 22LR.

That is the distance of the long gun range, as stated on the range's website. I was using that as a reference; since its currently my only spot to shoot. I haven't looked into alternatives.

Just use a .17 hmr for 150. A .22 is still accurate at that distance but a .17 hmr much better. Still next to nothing for kick.

Not to mention .17 hmr is a laserbeam and rediculously precise.

Ya, I have 17 hmr. You are correct, it is a laser bean - when there is not any wind. If you get cross breezes, that little bullet is really influenced by the wind.

I would suggest the 223 is the answer to the OP's question. There is a plethora of factory ammo (from performance to surplus) to suit your shooting needs. I handload mine and it is very cheap indeed for some really accurate pills.
