I hunted for several years on the tidal flats on the west side of James Bay. Our guide would have in the canoe a couple of beat up snow goose shell decoys with no heads. When we got to our hunting location he would pull out a pkge of disposable diapers, put the diapers over some fresh cut hooped gads, and sometimes he would whack out some great hunks of mud with an axe from the ground give it a bit of goose body shape prop it up on whatever sticks he could find. Up close the whole set up looked kind of sad, however from a distance it looked good. I know that set up brought in a lot of geese to us, far more than we could shoot anyways.
When I walk down the decoy isle at Cabelas and see all the very realistic looking decoys they have now, and the ridiculous prices, I often think of the disposable diapers and hunks of mud and sticks on James Bay that worked just fine.
