Hi all, long time firearm supporter but been out of ownership for a few years. I transferred all my stuff over to my son, restricted and non restricted. Well, for several reasons that have become quite urgent in my mind in the last couple of weeks I feel I need to get back into ownership. Im looking for a 9mm semi auto pistol and a shotgun. I had a gunsafe when I owned firearms before but I havevno room for one in my present location. What is considered minimum safe storage? Can it be trigger locked and stored in a briefcase sized boimeteric safe with ammunition stored seperately in a similar container? Thanks in advance guys…

Note: do not take legal advice from people on the internet.

SigWig and easy are correct. However, just to summarize. I am assuming a safe is not going to work for you for whatever reason.

For a long gun, it just needs to be disabled with a locking device. I prefer a combination trigger lock or cable lock (depending on the style of gun). Alternativly, you could use a hardcase with a lock on it.

For a hand gun, you can use a small single gun safe with biometrics, yes that works without a lock disabling the gun. Or you can use the case it came in (assuming the gun you buy comes with a case). You would need to lock the case, and a lock to disable the gun.

The courts have set a fairly low bar on what is or is not a safe. One of the metal biometric safes you find on Amazon for $80 - $200 would work fine. I have the ONNAIS safe, and it seems to work fine. I'm not super happy with the quality of the key lock, but other than that it fairly good.
