Is there a minimum legal trigger pull weight? I somehow think it's 2.5lbs but am I imagining this.

I have a trigger kit with several springs but the lightest one may be way too light.

I have hunted with an old set double trigger Mauser once, that pull was measured in ounces, and not many of them. Very tricky stuff. For field guns, a clean, crisp 3lb works good. Target shooting on the other hand, I have a 8oz trigger on my 308 Remmy. Sweeeeeeet!

Some shooting sports have minimum weight restrictions though.

Is there a minimum legal trigger pull weight?.

Sort of. Many shooting disciplines do have minimum pull weights, some don't. Ask the governing body for the sport you are shooting.

If its just plinking/hunting, than a good rule of thumb is, "doens't fire when banged, dropped or jarred."

Like skeetgunner says, some shooting disciplines do have minimum pull weights, but there's no government law about trigger pull weights.
Common sense should be a law, but it isn't. 2.5 lbs for a deer hunting rifle is too light. Three is plenty light for a hunting rifle. That half lb makes a difference. As daft as it sounds. A 2.5 lb trigger on a hunting rifle can be jostled to go bang. A crisp 3-4 lbs is actually better for a hunting rifle. Not so much for a varmint rifle or a target pistol. Either way, a very light trigger takes some getting used to.
"...a trigger kit..." Rifle or handgun.
