Miniwax Finishing Paste?

I have been puting layers and layers of Tung oil on my wood stocks and came across a tin of Miniwax finishing paste I'd forgotten I had.

I was wondering if that would be a good topping for my oiled stocks?

I put some on my 870 I'll be taking out tomorrow in the rain (and possibly wet snow).

Can I put it on metal too?

I use Tung oil on some of my stocks too. That, by itself, will resist water penetration into the wood. Wax won't hurt, but it won't do much to stop penetration, if the wood gets really soaked - and it makes further applications of Tung oil, problematic. As for the steel bits - give them a light coat of your choice of gun oil. Once you're back inside, do a field strip and make sure that there is no water/moisture trapped in the internals - or in/on the wood.

Fire is right about just using the Tung alone, your 'layers and layers' is the right thing and the wax won't hurt unless/until you want to re-apply Tung. I don't do the wax myself, but DO pull the stock off the gun and Tung the inner channels too. I 'hand-rub' the oil in, the friction aids the absorption.

Iv been using tung by itself with good results. Sometimes I’ll add 10-25% spar varnish on my last coat (25% in the photo), adds a nice finish but does mark up easier.

I'm a big fan of Min Wax products and prefer the antique oil over the tung oil. I like to get good oil penetration on the wood and finish with paste wax. Works great on the metal as well. Just buff in a fresh coat of wax as needed just like grandma used to do to the kitchen floor.

Don't hesitate to put good wax on tung oil finish ,just buff it with 0000x steel wool if you want to reapply tung oil.You should do that any way to make sure it is clean for the new oil. Most of the tung oil finishes on the market already have wax, some kind of polymer and a thinner in the mixture. Unless you get pure tung oil.Pure tung oil very thick, takes forever to dry and tends to go gummy after to many applications. It also does not penetrate very well. Great for food grade stuff like cutting boards but I would stay away from it for gun stocks the blend of wax and polymer really make the tung oil a much better choice.

Thanks. I've got the polymerized Lee Valley Tung oil.
