Minnesota Moose Calf Study.

If 69% of calves died from wolves, why not increase the hunting on wolves to favour the moose a bit? Is that being too logical? It makes me wonder what effect the higher population of wolves in Ontario has done to our moose if they are that efficient.

The argument will be that no studies exist to determine if the high rate of predation by wolves is a recent phenomenon or has always been that way. The cry will be more studies more money more time. Hopefully the moose can stand the management until it is figured out.

I have been involved in several moose calf counts. The first time mothers are usually less aggresive towards humans, than the mature cows.Moose often choose a point of land surrounded by water, or an island to give birth.

I think older cows tend to be more aggressive for their calf and overall better mothers. They would stick around for the calf.

I have seen young cows not wait around. Soon as the calf is down they are gone never to return. Older cows nuge the calf to get up and stand over it with ears down ready to charge. I'm sure a lot of people in Ontario have seen it because thats the only tag they have ever received. My hunting buddy has had to shoot a tree beside the cow to get her from stop charging him. He was being chased around big oak trees lol.
