Minor’s License

it says on the manitoba wildlife federation website that minors can possess a firearm, but how could that be if you cant acquire one?

Minors (ages 12 – 17) can qualify for a Minor’s License to possess a non-restricted firearm for the purpose of hunting, target shooting or to transport a firearm to and from a shooting range providing they have successfully completed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. http://mwf.mb.ca/mwf/mwf_things_hunter_laws.html
 
My son (15) just took all the courses (Safety course & Hunting course)
He can now legally use/possess one of my rifles in my general area if hunting.
He also now has a "hunting" card/license (small game)
He CANNOT purchase or acquire until he is 18 years of age.

Exactly, and when he turns 18 he has to apply for an adult "PAL". Try to get the paper work done before he turns 18. My son had some bureaucratic "challanges" and when I called to resolve some of them, as my son was away serving his country, they told me they could not be of assistance as he was now over 18 and the Privacy Act prevented them from discussing my son's application with them.
 
I'm aware of the whole minors license thing, my question is what needs to be done once the person has reached 18 years of age? Is there any extra courses to be completed or is it just a simple call to the RCMP to get the paperwork done. Does the minors course differ very much from a PAL course?

When they turn 18 (or just before as per C Broad Arrow) it's just a matter of paper work and a passport picture.
No other courses are required.
The "minors" course is/was the PAL course.
My son sat in the same classroom with 20 to 50 year olds learning the same thing.
