Minor and Major load data

What would or is a good formula for making Minor 9mm loads and what would make a good 9mm Major load ??

Or should I just play around with a chrony and do the math ??

Right now I have been using BDX 124g bullets and 4.0g of titegroup with a OAL of 1.090. Would this be a major or minor load ?

A good idea would be to have a look at a reloading manual. 4.0 gr of Titegroup and a 124 jacketed bullet gets you minor, barely, in my gun.
9mm Major is a somewhat specialized load used in IPSC open division. It can be done. I have no experience with it though.

Never ever ever try and make major with 9MM it would have to be overloaded to an unsafe level in order to do so. 38 super is very different and can of course make major safely.

Invest in a chrony if you can, or try and borrow one. It is the only way to know for sure that you have a proper load that is not excessive. Otherwise you will have to go a little heavy in order to make sure that you make the power factor you are after as each pistol is a little different.

Never try to make major loads for you production gun, but if your shooting 9mm major open then go for it., because you most likely built it that way.

Get a crony, 4.2 tightgroup and 124g bullet was giving me something over min minor couple if years ago when I was using that bullet powder combo

Need more info.

What division do you shoot?
What gun are you using?

You'll need a new (custom) gun for shooting Major 9mm loads for Standard or Open. There were a couple on EE lately I think... but you'd definitely want to check with the original builder to confirm it can handle the pressure. You'll need to run 147 grain bullets to nearly 1200 fps to safely make major. But why ruin our brass? Why not load .38 Super or 9x21? Heck, you might even find .40 S&W easier. To each their own though.

And yes as everyone else said, you should have a chrony for making loads (major or minor).

its a combo between the barrel and recoil spring to know if your gun will handle 9mm major, a proper barrel and spring will shoot 9mm major, you dont need a whole new gun.

Personally I wouldn't try to make major with 9 mm in standard. A 147 gr bullet at 1200 fps (as noted above) is hitting 176 pf ... So assuming that the gun could handle the pressures, would the recoil be manageable enough to hit your splits and transitions quickly? I dunno for sure since I've never tried it but I would have to think it would be tough ...

Why not a 40? Easy to make major and if you load properly you can make it shoot nice and soft. I hit major and my Tanfoglio shoots very soft. Using 200 gr bullets I only need to push them out to 850 fps (minimum) to make the 170 pf ... I normally load them up so I am hitting around 890 fps so I have some wiggle room and that gun still shoots easy.

I can't take credit for the load data since I got it from another of the nutz here ...

The minimum caliber for major in standard division is .40 (10mm). Appendix D2.
9 mm major should only be shot in guns specifically designed for that purpose.
