Been shooting 300 yards for few years, been working on a few loads to shoot 600 this summer.so today I was doing some rimfire out in the swamp lands and decided to put up a 12 inch target and back way up.when I got to were I could barely see the target I set up my gun with a 5x27 scope and then ranged it through the scope to be 575 yards.but what I saw was wild it was just a gasification of dancing beams,a mirage, how the hell do you shoot into that.are all days like this, with such a crazy mirage.i don't even know if the target was were I was looking.and if I was even able to range it correctly.there were water streams in the area and i don't know if that made things worse, but goin find out i guess.

If you shoot at the image of the target in a dancing mirage you will not hit the target where you are aiming. In fact you may not hit the target at all. The mirage is telling you what the wind is doing between you and the target. Shooting at longer distance is only interesting when the wind is blowing. If the wind isn't blowing, it is just a hold a squeeze game and everyone is tied for first place.
Get yourself a copy of the Wind Book.

Weather is a big factor in mirage, hot steamy days with little or no wind are the worse. Cooler cloudy days are much better. Try turning your scope power down this usually helps .

Mirage is your friend... learn what it is telling you. Yes, you will learn how to shoot in that soup and hit targets very well.

Some scopes help see through the mirage better then others BUT if you are going to do more LR shooting and don't shoot on a range with flags, one of your optics should be able to see mirage.

Natures wind flags....

Miller and Cunningham wind reading book. Best investment I have ever made in learning wind.
