A little question for you double shotgun lovers here.
I bought a Charles Daly model 500 side by side the
other week, started a thread in the 'Shotgun'
forums to inquire about its worth, so any of you that
read/responded to it will know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, this weekend I put about 75 rounds thru it again
at some clays. This thing shoots SO nice!
However, after a wee while during the day, the rearward
trigger would not release the firing pin. The front trigger/
barrel would fire every time, but once in a while the rear one
had no pull. You could squeeze it all the way to the back of the
trigger gaurd and nothing, no tention. I would then break the
gun, close it again, sometimes that worked, sometimes not.
I would fiddle with the break lever making sure it was
completley engaged. Happened I would say 1 out of every 10ish.

I'm a bit lost as what to do here. I don't want to take the gun
apart as I have no idea how, it's all pins. Would the sear maybe
be a bit sticky in there, what about a little drop of lite machine
oil or something ? I dry fired the barrel only a couple times as
I don't like doing that and with no shell in there, it fired EVERY
time. .

Befroe I started shooting this gun, it sat for god knows how long,
which makes me think it's maybe lazy parts.
Anything come to mind for you guys here ?

With all the $$$ you saved on the gun ... you now need to go see a good gunsmith, one familiar with doubles in particular.

You need some work done and it's NOT neccessarily the kind of thing for the home "hobbyist" !!!

My guess is that the left hammer is not staying cocked. Try opening the gun sharply or a little more sharply than at present to bring the hammer a trifle farther back. I had a similar problem with a Parker dbl except that in my case if I opened the gun carefully and gently, the left barrel would often fire from the recoil of the right. If I opened the gun sharply the left sear engaged more fully and no problems.

Hey Thx. MC
Your comment sounds accurate and makes sence to me.
With these guns, what action resets the hammers, breaking
the gun or actuating the breaking lever ?

Breaking the gun moves the hammers back. I agree that it sounds as if the hammer is not cocking.
You need to get this sorted out, there is a safety issue here. If the hammer is not staying cocked, and is going back down when the action is closed, the firing pin is going to be protruding from the breech face. You do NOT want to snap the gun closed. Also, if it is not cocking properly there is the risk that the hammer could slip and cause an unintended discharge. The problem could be as minor as a weak or gummed up sear spring, but you need to find out.
This is a boxlock, with the mechanical parts hung on pins. Dis- and re-assembly are interesting. You will also note that the screws have very slender slots. I would suggest that you contact a 'smith who is experienced with this sort of gun. Don't know where you are, but Jason at Gunco in Nepean(Ottawa) could be trusted.

Thx. Tiriaq, I appraciate all the informative responces here.
I'm in Calgary. I'm sure someone close by would know more
about these, I just have to find them.

If your in Calgary, Try David Henry. He is familiar with SxSwork. He is in Bentley Ab. Working on SxS and O/U Shotguns is a specialty, you don't want some fibreglass and Rem. 700 "Tactical "gunsmith or a benchrest specialist working on it.
