On another board they talked about handguns, we, as aficionados, pursue. Rather than this, I suggest we look at prizes that got away.

Many years ago, I had a chance to buy a Walther (Manurhin) 22 Sport pistol at a bargain price. I was short on funds and let this jewel get away; I have never seen another Walther 22 Sport pistol since that day.

I also missed the boat when I did not purchase a S&W 44 Russian handgun; this was while on vacation in Arizona. Again, I rue my stupidity on missing the boat.

What is your story?

Regards,

Richard :D

Passed up on a nice S&W Model 52.
Have kicked myself ever since.
Friend offered me a nice little S&W 32/22 Kit Gun (.22 cal) with a 3"(?) barrel and decided I needed the $$ for something else.

I was talked out of a new Glock 19 (cash in hand - I actually said I want to buy it!)
before they were "prohibited"...

I still remember the conversation... "Hey, they are going to bring in a new law that will allow the RCMP to kick in your door and take that from you! - You should get the 17 instead"

"Really?"

<sigh>

Missed boat big time.

When I first got my FAC, a local gunshop in my little town had a nice Argentinian 1911 for $200. A real beauty with some work done. I was too busy popping zits and chasing fat girls to actually buy it.

I also regret noy buying a prohib before the new laws went into effect.

I also regret not buying tons of inexpensive surplus guns from SIR 15+ years ago.
Like wrapped Irish Enfields and Garands too.
Lets not forget the semi-auto AKs too....
and the Makarovs

Ahhhh... the ones that got away.

There have been a few over the years.

More than that was the fact that all the handguns I bought (prior to 98 or whatever) I put in my dad's name since he has a huge bank safe and I would store them at his place. Of course, due to that, I lost my prohib status... not that I ever had it. If I would have just transfered one in my name... oh well it's a hard lesson learned.

The BAR for $500Cdn. Long before owning FA was a big deal. Had the money, but had just been laid off and couldn't spend it. Found out oost 1 Jan 1978 that $500 was too much and that I could have had a STEN for less than $100Cdn, just to get on paper with FA. sniff.

Well, long before I had my student line-of-credit maxxed, I could've bought a Kimber Custom II...I should've, but I waited. So I'm going to be waiting another 4-5 years before I get one... :(

I feel your pain brother! I've always enjoyed spy stories and the James Bond stories. I've read every Bond book and seen every movie. I've also wanted a Walther PPK since I was in high-school (20 years ago). But I always had higher priorities. So I’ve always had some excuse to put it off of another year. First it was not enough money, then too busy to get the proper license, then the wife doesn’t like me having guns. (Since I no longer hunt, why have guns?), etc., etc. Then all too late I find out that the laws have changed and my much-loved PPK is prohibited and I’ll never again have the chance to own one. Only recently I’ve actually met someone who does own one, so I’ve held one once. But I don’t think I’ll ever get a chance to actually shoot one. The closest I can get with the current laws is to buy one in 9mm (short) and have a 4.5 inch barrel made for it, (oh, of course the original barrel has to be destroyed too). The only saving grace is that (in the movies) James Bond now shoots a Walther P99. I had to make sure I did everything I could to get one.

My biggest regret is that I didn't get an FAC 20+ years ago. I could have bought a lot of cool things that are "evil" now...

2 years ago I passed on a 6" .357 Python with deep rich bluing, less than 200 rds through it, in a hard case with original & hogue grips, a single stage press, 4 lbs of powder, 1000 pieces of brass, 800 primers, 800 bullets, a few loading odds & ends - all for $600. The guy offered it to me the day after I gave him $400 for a S&W M41.
He really didn't advertise it after that, but when I went back about 4 months later I missed it by a week. :(

i missed a s&w 686 $300.00 cash and a glock 17 with all the bells a whistles and extra mags and holster $700.00. i learned my lesson very quick after that. BUY BUY BUY

Same here. I turned 18 in 1990. Wish I would have got the FAC back then.

I turned 18 in 2002(end of Nov.) and had My PAL the following May.

I HAD my FAC in the mid/late 80s, and I let it lapse, and got out of shooting altogether for the last 10+ years, and now I'm back into it, and I'm crying about all the guns I was looking forward to owning (AKs, HK-91, etc...) that I can't.   I wish I had a time machine!

Cheers!

I see almost everyone talking about past stuff..........I, for my part, do miss on quite a regular note as I run from one ``Collector pistol`` to another........Always trying to find ``that special / missing one``. Wallet sometimes dictate me to back off when price is getting sky high.......So I miss......

By the way, how many on this board would pay 2K for a wartime P38 ?? Get the idea........

When prices are close to a morgage cash down for a single piece, I usually miss !! Who wouldnt ??

MARK

Richardoldfield - Fantastic thread you've started!

Hmmmm....let's see...

I wish I'd bought an AK or shorty M-16 when I had the chance - in general to have gained that prohib status. In particular, I missed out on a truly beautiful 6 1/2" Smith model 29 that gazed back at me from inside the gun case at "Winnipeg Supply" Lumber yard, on Portage Ave. just off of Arlington street. Imagine, at one time stores like this sold handguns. This would have been in about 1975 or so. I know I can still buy one if I keep my eyes open, but THAT one will haunt me forever. Ah, I can still see it's orange ramp and white outline rear sights...the price tag read something like $300 or so.

Jeff/1911.
