I am going to put Mk4 Leupold rings and bases on my M3A/Rem 700P combo and have had no luck deciding on the one piece or two piece bases. The rifle is used for shooting out to 1000 yards and is a tack driver.

I prefer the look of the two piece bases, but will I be selling myself short if I don't go with the one piece? I don't plan on using any other optics on this system as I am happy with the combo, but the versatility of a one piece base seems to be a positive. The one piece also seems to be more "sturdy" than the two piece. Any comments would help with my decision, I am looking for something rock solid. Thanks.

The use of a a two piece base setup could cause issues if your mounting holes are misaligned. If your holes are off centre the use of a a two piece base could result in damage to your rings, optic or shearing your mounting screws due to the offset or misaligned mounting holes. The chances are slim, but it is possible. I run a single base piece for simplicity. The other up side to a single piece base is the extra pic rail which is handy if you intend to mount an ACI or level.

I used to run a Leupold MK4 one piece base.

It served it's purpose well.

I prefer one price bases over two piece bases any day.

The only draw back was that the ring slots are not picatinney spec, therefore I couldn't swap scopes between my other rifles without having to move rings.Plus the MK4 bases are flat with no MOA taper.

Thats why I went with a NEAR base............

For the money, you might want to shop around with regards to brand. Myself and two shooting buddies all run TPS rings and bases. One buddy just switched over to TPS after snapping his Leupold Mk4 ring while installing it.

### International located outside Edmonton is a great source for TPS gear. Joe #####(I believe he's on CGN??) is great to deal with. Both rings and a single piece base ran me around $200 shipped. The Aluminum rings(which I have) are tested at 25,000 g's of acceleration with no failure. According to TPS their rings a 98% concentric. Meaning you can obtain a 98% contact surface with your optic. Other rings run around 40-60% contact. True or not I cannot say. I can say that my rings were snug. With the tops removed it took both hands to move my optic forward and back during setup.

Just to add, MK4 bases/rings are not cheap and overpriced IMHO.

TPS rings and bases are you best value for price and quality.

I would agree 100% with Skullboy. I have had the Leupold Mark 4, Badger, Smith Enterprise, FA Enterprise, Near base Mark 4 Rings, and 3 sets of TPS base/ring combos. For the money you simply cannot beat TPS. It will serve the purpose just as well as the other brands but for quite a bit less.

On the 2 piece base issue, there is not a big trend towards them, some M24 US Army rifles have them, and Tac Ops who builds the out of this world Tango 51 rifle, has really done his home work and litterally engineered the 2 piece bases he puts on his rifles and swears by them.

Go for TPS, by far the best bang for the buck.
