I am wonder what the options are for a muzzle loader for a woman that will still kill a deer. I live in a ml only area and my mother just got her licences so she wants to go hunting. She cant pull back a bow so ML seems to be the way to go. I will start her off on a .22 but I figure I might as well figure out what I need and then keep my eyes open for something. Thanks

A .50 with patched roundballs and FFg has very mild recoil. And it will effectively kill deer out to 100 yards.

I am not too familiar with MLs but doesnt the accuracy fall off when the charge is lowered? Would a 45 be better than a 50? I dont know to much when it come to this stuff so give it to me simple like. :D thanks!

I havent shot a .45 but from what I hear they aren't all that great. I have heard that they are harder to get a consistant grouping. Also the bullet choices for the .45 aren't all that great. If you go to a .50 bullets are readily available and assortment is great. For your mother a decent .50 with 70 -80 grains and a T/C Maxi-ball (conical:all lead bore size bullet)should do the trick out to 100 yards. You could also go to the old reliable Hornady XTP (copper jacketed hollow point with sabot) 44/240 or 45/250 and start with a 80 grain load for good accuracy and shots out to 100 and a little beyond. I shoot powder exclusively and I start at 70 -80 grains and work up my load until it spreads. This is just my opinion and am also interested in all other comments.

The best accuracy in my wife's muzzleloader is the load she uses. I started muzzleloader hunting with a .45, and much prefer the .50. It has far better knock down power, and only slightly more recoil. A .45 cal round ball is only 128 grains, so shot placement and range are very important. I used to keep my shots to 60 yards with the .45. The .50 cal round ball weighs in around 180 grains. Most traditional style .50 cal rifles I have seen are very accurate around the 70-80g of FFG powder.

And now snowshoe has it bang on! Skip the .45, forget the conicals and forget the sabot/pistol/copper bullets. Round ball .50 Cal. is the way to go. It really has mild recoil, and kills very well. Just make sure you get one that has a slow twist - 1:48 or slower, as these are the most accurate with round balls.

CGN comes through again. Thanks guys for the info. Now, where is that catalog???
