Mmmmm.... Gooose

I was out this AM. Got skunked. The geese were overhead about 100 miles east of us feasting on corn (we were in a marsh). Got into about 25 feet of water setting decoys and my drain popped open and I couldn't get it shut before completely soaking myself. Fun times!

The morning here started out overcast and rainy, then turned blue bird. Geese were moving but real high up. We pulled the decoys and started hitting our fields and ponds. 2 in total today, but saw over 200 ducks on the ponds we hunt. When the 25th rolls around we will be having a very nice Wood Duck shoot. The highlight of the day was buddies 3 1/2 month old lab made a very nice water retrieve.

Ended up with 24.

I called to a passing flock of about 25 geese .They swung around and came floating in towards my decoys(mostly those old waxed cardboard cutouts), with their feet extended for a landing. I poked my double barrel shot gun through an opening on my hay-bale blind, waited 'til they were bunched up and blasted off two shots........and ....MISSED! AAARGH!! How do you miss with a 12 guage!
Fun though . Next time I'll wait until they are closer ....They were the big Canadas so they were probably further away than they looked.....anyways that's my story and I'm sticking to it .....

The hay bale blind that I built is pretty comfy. The grass covering acts like a thatched roof to wick off the rain and really cuts down on the wind.

I was working at a customers house yesterday and was just finishing when he asked if I had my migratory license. I said yes and he said "Great. Do you want a Canada for supper?" Of course I said yes. So he grabbed his shotgun and pointed to a flock behind his house in a field. To make a long story short I got close enough to them to take a shot and his dog retrieved it for me.

The best goose is one cooked with bacon inside and on top. Mmmmmm.

Went out this morning to the Sacred Swamp, which is a ##### to get into. Twenty minute drive there, an hour walk through stinging nettle, six foot ferns, vines and grass past your eyes. Water was really really low at our spot and the geese weren't flying much. We eventually got 3 geese total and I lost one. I shot it too high up, it crashed into the thick stuff 100 yards out across the swamp, 45 minutes of wading later I couldn't find it and shut that down. What sucks even more is that I missed a crack at 3 sets coming through while I was out. Tons of ducks flying everywhere, can't wait for the season.

Happy goose hunting, and Thanks for listening to my rambles.

Not much of a goose fan. I honestly believe that most people get more excited about the size and amount of meat they get than the actual flavor. I shoot them when they come by but I would rather shoot 8 greenwing teal than 8 Canadas (Specks are a completely different story).

That said I'd rather eat the goose legs than the breasts. Braised slowly or simmered under duck fat, they are amazing. I had one year where I shot well over 100 geese while duck hunting. We turned the bulk of them into hotdogs for the kids. They tasted like hotdogs.

Had a great day on Fri, I went out by myself & set up. Sunny then cloudy, clear then rain. I got in lots of shooting, and only had to clean 2. I shot over the first ones, looking at the birds not sights (rookie move). They will be in the slow cooker tomorrow. Ducks are few & far between here this year. Good luck to all going out. AJ

Went out Saturday, saw a few flocks but they were too high or too far east of us. Tried several times to call em in but to no avail. Oh well, going out Monday morning for a couple of hours.... hoping for better results.

Congrats to guys who've done well so far and some nice pics too.

We got 6 this morning...should have had more.

Anyone have this......I HAVE TO BUY ONE!!!
