I just recieved an m91/30 from P&S and some ammo from SIR. When I try to chamber a round the bolt won't fully close, but I have no problem cycling the bolt empty. This is most likely a headspace problem, yes? I need to take it to a gunsmith.

What will the gunsmith most likely do to correct the problem? Or am I better off returning the rifle to P&S? I really dont want to return it; it's a beautiful specimen.

I guess I'm more interested in the procedures (if any) to correct this problem. Thoughts?

Are you loading the rifle from the mag? The Mosin is a controlled round feed rifle, can't just drop a round in the chamber and close the bolt.

Is there any obstruction in the chamber like a case neck?

Have you tried it with more than one type of ammo?

How much pressure are you putting into closing the bolt?

No obstructions... I ran a boresnake through.

Im putting plenty of pressure on the bolt. I could probably close it, but it takes all my strength just to get it to creep closer to closing... I shouldn't have to really exert myself just to close a stupid bolt.

Only tried one type of ammo though (Hungary manufacture)...

Have you examined the chamber for dirt/debris/dried grease?

Do you have any other mosins ot try the ammo in? Another bolt body to try in your rifle?

Don't be surprised if you have trouble closing the bolt on the heavy ball, seems many of the rims are thicker than normal. On my rifles some were just hard to close & others you practicaly had to hammer it shut.

Hitzy,

The MN isn't CRF. Single rounds are no problem.

Worked for me! Might want to try some igman first or have the headspace check but I have never seem a mosin that was that tight. This only happened with the heavy ball, the 150gr hungarian was fine.

would anyone object to firing it as long as i could get the bolt closed?

ill go over the chamber with a brush and some solvent; if that solves the problem ill let you all know. thanks for the help.
