Mobile gunsmith in Ottawa

'Specially with Folks that can't do the work any longer due to health issues. I'd check into his "license' - if any, and Liability Ins and 'references - just out of curiosity. I'd never have someone in my home w/o a huge $-deposit. I don't do FTF at home, let alone 'a gunsmith'.

My original question was has anyone dealt with this gunsmith. I didn't ask who was the best gunsmith in Ottawa. I dealt with Jason ever since he took over Gunco from George.
Sorry, I shouldn't have asked a leading question. I was thinking the reason someone might want a 'mobile gunsmith' is to work on a gun that cannot be transported... i.e. a prohibited and from what I know Jason is licensed to work on those so transport to him would be approved. Can't help you with vetting this mobile gunsmith but may be able to help if there is an underlying problem of a gun you want to fix :)

The gunsmith licenses I've seen are tied to a location... So seems very strange to me too at first glance.

Went and looked at this site - he lists his business license number... and it's within a valid range, so anyone could call the CFP to verify... Based on the number he would have started in the last three years but more than one.

I'm leaning towards saying that he is legit and probably has a licensed location but is also licensed to transport. Most gunsmiths can do this, but I suspect most just don't want to try and stuff a lathe in a truck :) Don't take this as me vetting him - I'm just saying that I see how this could be legal within the current licensing framework.

Cant vouch for the quality/services but did meet/speak with the owner at the Carp and Perth Gunshow last year. Friendly guy.
He had a booth and was handing out magnets and pamphlets about his services.

Personally, the ful mobile operation doesnt work well for me. Don’t want a big work vehicle with “Gun Medic” printed on the side, parked at my house for added passerby attention. Downside of suburbia.

Mobile services are usually for quick or hard to move equipment.

Like when you need a lowboy trailer or something. All rifles are at least somewhat man-portable, and tooling and time for working on guns is not condusive for "while you wait" services!

An interesting solution to a non existing problem. As mentioned having a truck with a big a$$ logo parked in the driveway seems like an invitation for a future break in.

well, his certificate says 2018 so... pretty new to the game. Maybe the mobile part isn't for your convenience but his overhead, no commercial/retail space to lease and insure, no fancy ass 'wired to the police station' alarm systems/subscriptions....
as far as working out of a truck .... looks like a pretty nice truck!

yes, it's kind of odd but whatever ...

He has quite a few picture of his work on facebook. It also show he was at the Eganville gun show this past August.

Speaking of Jason, he has been in the gunsmith business for over 40 years. I first met him when he was just an apprentice with George at Gunco. We shouldn't discount or ignore young people coming into this niche trade. Someday Jason is going to retire so we should give these young gunsmith a chance to build trust with the gun enthusiast community.

The problem isn't trusting a new guy per se.

The problem is his business model. Nobody is going to trust him to come to their house if they don't already know him, and even if they do know him nobody wants a big white truck with GUN MEDIC across the side in their driveway for hours at a time.

Its not exactly an inconspicuous vehicle...

Really! Has the Liberals scare gun owner so much with the anti-gun rhetoric that they turn into closet gun owners? I thought only people from Ontario make statement like that, not people from out West. Then again BC is NDP territory.

It's a concern about break ins, theft, home invasions. That kind of thing. The truck is basically a giant sign saying "STEAL GUNS HERE!"

My neighbors know I own guns. I don't hide the fact I'm a gun owner from people I know. At the same time I don't need every single person who walks by over the course of multiple hours to also know that fact. Maybe that kind of convenience is worth the risks associated for you. It's not worth it to me, even if realistically it's a small risk. And I'm clearly not unique in that.

Is that picture of his vehicle from in person, or his website? Looks like the two billboards on the side are photo-shopped on, and rather poorly at that. I wouldn't be surprised if his truck is plain white. His tools inside are in jeopardy daily with that on the side. I stand to be corrected.

Edit. I snooped his pictures online. Looks like the billboards on the side are removable, so maybe only used when at gun shows etc? Good on him for trying, seems legit.
