my friend has a mod 88 winchester in 308 we took shooting last week and it was all over the place so we figured it was the crappy scope he had on it.so he put a brand new elite 3200 3-9X40 and i went and tried it yesterday with 150 gr hornady factory and it shot about a 5 or 6inch group any one have any idea why it would be shooting like that?? the gun is fairley old but hasnt been shot a whole lot.. any ideas would be appreciated thank's
 
Watch how tight the front assembly screw is. These often are too tight or too loose. It make take some shooting at various degrees of tightness to settle her down. I would also remove the butt plate and make sure the rear receiver bulk head is tight. Just check the slot head screw visible when the butt plate is removed. Last resort switch to Winchester Super X 180 gr power points. All my 88's love that stuff.
