Just picked up this interesting DOU 44 - 98 Mauser but I have never seen this D4 brass tag on butt stock ... any ideas?

SS rifle most definitely.... awesome it's even cooler than I thought, now I know I got a deal.

I have no idea where he got that info from... but I highly doubt that tag has anything to do with the SS.

Likely just a museum or some private collection tag, I doubt it’s military.

Post more pics of the rifle, looks like a decent dou 44. Brünn Czech occupation made K98k for the German army.

The crossbolt is backwards btw, the take down holes should be on the same side as the bolt. :)

I thought all SS rifles were made in Steyr, Austria

I believe it was sarcasm or at least that's how I took it.

I will post more pix tomorrow, it's in great shape, only issue I have is bolt serial number does not match the rest of the gun, although there is no serial number on the action just barrel, floor plate and barrel band.

I would say that rifle has either seen an FTR or someone has put it back together from parts.

The stock finish and blued butt plate would be the first indicators.

Still it's a decent representative piece and IMHO shooter grade. If it happens to have an excellent bore, it should shoot very well.

TURF THE LIBERALS IN 2019

Liberals really like POOR people, they're making more of them every day

If you can't vote CPC, stay at home in protest.

Agreed, the stock looks definitely refinished and I've never seen a blued/used butt plate on a 74 year old K98 in original condition. It indeed looks to be reassembled/built from bits and pieces. Shooter grade if the bore is fine.

I disagree on the stock finish, I have seen other Dot and Dou 44’s with similar looks, these are late Czech and there are very similar examples in the Karabiner 98k books.

However, more pics are needed. If the butt plate is blued and it’s not the pics, then someone has reblued it. Or it saw service with someone post ww2.

Agreed, there is more refurbs like this out there. But yes, more pics are needed.

Stock looks like it has been sanded and hit with walnut stain to me. Close ups of the bolt cutout would show whether sanded or not for sure. Lacquer thinner and soft rags will take the stain off for the most part. Had a CE 43 that looked identical in colour and used the thinner on it.

I’ve looked at ALOT of 98k and never seen that tag. Post war applied, when, where, who , no idea.

You can have a white glue look similar to this one but this one has been sanded.

Something very beautiful about this one, love the DOU rifles, and the stock characteristics are so unique its cool!

I'm n the road until next week but will post more pix when i get back.

The story was this guys uncle was serving in Canadian Military and stationed in Germany in the late 60's.
He purchased this before coming back home because a couple of his buddies bought one each and he thought it would be neat to have, it's sat in his closet for the past 50 years untouched.
He never shot it or did anything with it, it just sat there.
