Hi guys, i could use your input on a project.. here is what i have built so far
OAL: 26 1/8

The handguard as been replaced by an 7 inches YHM

Now the Ruger SR-22 Top rail screw holes does not match the standard Ruger handguard.
On this picture.. the first hole (from the left) fits but not the 2nd and 3rd. The plan was to saw the extra top rail and repaint black the tip but how can i fix that rail to that handguard..
create a new screw "threaded" hole somehow.. or just drill and fix with a small bolt/nut..

The top SR22 rail fit well (in height) with the other top rail

Thank you guys.. any input are welcome

Drill and tap new screw holes...its an art

If never done or not comfortable potentially botching it up, send it off to a competent gunsmith, its a quick and easy job. If you don't have any in montreal, you can ship it to toronto, $10 each trip and have Casey and Tac Ordinance do it, he does great work with respectful turnaround

Drilling and tapping would work fine, but I'd be less than impressed with drilling into the divots for screws #2 and #3. Shortening the factory handguard would give you all the holes in the right places.

I'll try a few place that i can think off locally.. and maybe check into "drill and tap" tools first..
also the owner of a range i know is a 40 years exp in gunsmithing.. sure hope he is able to tap a hole into that odd shape (really don't know how to say that in english but.. the half-moon.. the groove.. the little depression, whatever.. on top of the yhm handguard).

Shortening the factory handguard would give you all the holes in the right places.

I am aware of that but the point of importing that handguard from Brownells was to shave weight over the Ruger handguard and be close to the length of the barrel. It would be the easy way to do it but that is not why im asking for advice in this thread.

about less than impressed.. i think the size of the Ruger SR22 top rail base would hide the screw pretty well ... but..

what about
screw in #1,
skip #2 & #3.
drilling and tapping the #4

2 screws on a 7 inch handguard should be enough

Mount the rail using the one available screw using loc tite and put glue under the other posts. Believe me I've seen it done. I bought a sr22 from a friend when FF first sold them. The gsmith there glued rail into place before they came out with the top rail lol

Does hell to the finish if you take it off so I wouldn't recommend that ;)

I do agree that cutting down the original hand guard would be your best best if you don't have the means to drill and tap new holes.

On a personal note. I think a fake can would look better, so you don't accidentally shoot off the tip of your finger :D ;)

My instinct tells me to stay away from glue regarding gunsmithing :) but im sure someone in the history did it..
I sure could cut down the original handguard but that would bring a buyer-remorse feeling regarding buying a lightweight HG and wasting more than a hundred bucks..

As of right now.. even for 1 little screw.. i would like to try the drill n tap way.. but i can already imagine buying more tools for a single use job.. depends on how much and what do i need exactly to drill/tap the right size.

Get your self some Center punches as well. Extra drill bits. Tap and die kit. Drill press (ideal) or a steady hand lol

Go to crappy tire and get one of those red box drill presses for under 200 at least you will always have one. Look on kijiji for them ;)

1500 rounds later.. still got all my finger ;)
Its hard to shoot off the tip of your finger with the pistol grip.. but im sure some people will find a way somehow.. lol

and thanks for the advice guys!

Hi, I'm a total noob at guns, so take this with a grain of salt. Is it possible you have the hand guard on backwards? It looks from the photo like if you flipped it front to back, the screw holes might line up? No offence BTW, I think you've done a great job with it - I am a fan of the fixed stock too.

edit - nevermind - I see that the first hole already lines up under the rail - I was looking at the side rail holes.

no offence taken.. i would be glad to actually have just inverted the handguard and everything would fit by correcting that. But unfortunately its not the case.. the way it came from brownells in the packaging.. i have no doubt its ok the way it is.

Also.. having the handguard the way it is.. no screw holes fits.. but i flipped the Ruger top rail and one of them is ok with the yhm hh holes. i learned the hard way there is no standard regarding distance between screws on handguard produced by different company.

The handguard come with a small picatinny and a top full length picatinny, but the height does not match with the SR-22 picatinny.

well thank you guys.. turned out great.. bought a tap n die set.. used steady hand and ballz o steel ..

put the saw throught the SR22 top rail

I think i could mount an holosight or something.. not sure yet.. but the red laser was nice in the woods at night near the camp fire.

Very nice... Looks clean, and definitely original (at least from the ones I've seen). I would love to have something like this in my possession. Only thing that (kinda) bugs me is the difference in colour between the handguard and the rest of the rifle, and the two different colours of the rails. But, I suppose there's not much that can be done about that without painting the entire gun.

Nice work though... I've done some drilling and tapping myself, and I'd like to install a rail on my Ithaca, but somehow I just can't bring myself to do it.

well sorry the color on my gun bugs you.. i'll keep that in mind for my next crazy project,.. haha.. hummmm... the sweet smell of Napalm and Sarcasm in the morning

Its a no big deal on my part.. i don't notice it anymore ..
mainly.. I would totally mess it up if i tried myself to paint the whole gun.

Looks pretty good! I'm sure its a super fun gun!

thank you very much!

Exactly what i had in mind when i frankensteinified all those parts together.. super fun gun to shoot.. i got another modified 10/22 scoped for when i want a tack driver.. this is an ammo dispenser :)

Changed a little since this thread, not much tho.. internal parts mainly

Haha, sorry, didn't mean any offense... :D

It is a great looking gun, and trust me, I'd be happy to have it even if it was painted three shades of pink and half the paint was flaking off. I'm just a little OCD, and you've certainly got the attention to detail, so I thought I'd bring it up as some "constructive criticism"... Or maybe I'm just jealous. ;)

I see you've added a new RDS as well... How's that handling? I had a chance to shoot an SR-22 last night with a red dot sight, and finally realized how amazingly easy they are to shoot with. I won't admit to my groupings (mostly since it was just to test the gun), but I liked it.
