Looking for some details regarding options for replacement of a Winchester Model 12 barrel. Original was cut down years ago and is very thin. I would like to get it rebarrelled and believe a gunsmith needs to fit one. Couple of questions:

1) Any idea where I might buy a M12 Skeet (WS1 or WS2) barrel?
2) Can I buy a vent rib barrel and cut down / have Briley tubes installed? If so, what barrel might best accomodate?
3) Do the later model Browning M12 barrels swap?
4) Can you recommend any particular smith to do the work - preferably in the SW Ontario region?
5) Any other pitfalls that I should know about?

Thanks for any input.

Model 12's were a very good shotgun for their day but because of the design are terribly expensive to repair.

You will be able to buy a new shotgun for less money than working over your Model 12.

Epps has one right now, a heavy duck gun. Bore is good , finish is poor. Sounds like a candidate for chopping, chokes and reblue. Might get the whole thing done for $400 including the barrel.

Try Keith Long at Long's Gun located on the shores of Rice Lake at Bewdley, Ontario. (905)797-2700. Closed on Mondays. Keith is an easy guy to talk to, he has been around model 12's for a long time! You never know, he may have ideas for you.
There is a gunshow in Ancaster this Sunday A.M., you may be lucky enough to find a barrel there, then again you might win a lottery too!
What gauge is your model 12? The Browning Model 12's were only produced in 20 and 28 gauge and the Model 42 (.410).
As for original Model 12's in WS1, they are not cheap! I'm talking $1200-$1500.00 for the ones that I have seen. Who knows, someone else here may have one cheaper? I hope this helps?
