model 12 trap ... question

As I know, they are all marked "TRAP" with a duck bill vent rib or solid rig, and Winchester proof mark is off center to clear rid.

This off center proof mark should be at left on front top of the receiver.

Many Winchester Mod. 12 have been modified by "Simmons" in USA to fake a real Mod. 12 Trap Gun.

:) More of a bridge than a rib. Certainly not a fake as it doesnt look anything like the OEM rib.

Not all M12 Trap guns were marked with the "trap" designation bottom side of the reciever/mag tube. The last ones made were not for some reason...cost cutting maybe? My 1948 trap gun is but the 1963 trap I have recently aquired is not.

It is a factory trap model, duck bill ramp, three pin rib, off set proof and factory red recoil pad. The lumber is outstanding and straight stock as opposed to the monte carlo which was also offered.

hi m12.. mine is a Y series made in 72

IIRC when the m12 was reintroduced as the Y series, there were 4 different models. Trap with a Mone Carlo stock. Trap with a straight stock. Skeet. and the field gun. The field differed from the average m-12 field in that a vent rib was standard and it had a competition style fore stock. I can not remember if they were marked trap and skeet etc. but you could tell them by the butt wood.

They quit stamping in about 1949 you can have a gun stamped trap but actually is a field gun trap was also a grade of the gun which had up grades usually wood if you take the butt stock off there is sometimes a T stamped in the receiver
