Where is the club that hosts the shoot and what is the shoot date?
I brought a 686 combo 20/28 gauge with me this time
Here's a M12 12 ga 1961 Pigeon grade that I got from from Spank when he had a weak moment. I foolishly decided to sell it, even worse Spank didn't want it back so I sold it to a buddy who I owed a favour. Now both Spank and I have serious regrets as Pigeon grades are rather rare.
A couple of collectors have mentioned 28 ga M12's. I had one and saved the pictures. It was one of the earliest ones being built in 1937. Has a 26" barrel choked Mod with 2 7/8" chamber. It also has a Simmons Vent rib and has after market scroll engraving which was probably done by Simmons when they added the rib.

So was this an actual Winchester made 28ga or a Simmons conversion? Hard to make out but does the barrel have 2 7/8" stamped on it? That would suggest Winchester made!

I figured it was with the 2 7/8" stamp and being in the correct spot and corresponding with first year production but you never know? There are some pretty good fakes out there and some pretty scrupulous folks who make them to fool others into parting with their $.
The fakes are made on 20 ga M12 frames and a 28 ga barrel from a Win single shot. Actually, the made-up ones really aren't fakes---they were cheaper to make than the cost of "the real deal" after Winchester stopped making the 28 ga. I recently saw a "fake 28" for sale at auction---it was plainly marked as an "upgrade" and was sold for a hefty sum, approaching the cost of "the real deal". Shooters love the 28 ga, especially a 28 ga M12.

From what I've read Simmons also used 16ga frames as well as 20ga.
After Winchester discontinued the 28 gauge Model 12, Simmons bought all the parts Winchester had.This included a lot of barrels,which they used to make up 28 gauge Model 12 guns .The 20 and 16 gauge Model 12 guns, used the same frame as the 28 gauge Model 12.
I believe that is a time capsule Spank, even the box looks brand new. You don't come across that everyday. Good for you.
I've been a fan of the M12 since I was a boy and still have quite a few of them; pre-war solid ribs, Trap/ Skeet/ Field, 2-Pin milled rib Trap and Skeet and 3-Pin Trap and Field, even an unfired field gun, but, have yet to come across a Y-Model in near the condition of yours.
I have one photo I found of 3 excellent condition 2-Pin M12's I have.
The one infront is a 1951 WS1 Skeet, the next two are 1949 Trap
I've been a fan of the M12 since I was a boy and still have quite a few of them; pre-war solid ribs, Trap/ Skeet/ Field, 2-Pin milled rib Trap and Skeet and 3-Pin Trap and Field, even an unfired field gun, but, have yet to come across a Y-Model in near the condition of yours.

Those are pretty nice Rod ,don't think I could say I'VE seen better and I have seen a lot. The 28 markings are in 3 places Spank on an original 28 g you could probably fake 2 but the cartridge cutoff is unique to the 28 g model 12 factory gun.I have seen a fake one for sale that advertised as a 28 g but had an 8 stamped over the 0 and was not the right shape.
