Some of the older guns like the model 1200 had two different options for chokes .. One would come with a fixed choke and one would have a screw in choke .. I am under the impression that shooting steel out of a fixed choke is not so good .. So does that mean you can shoot steel out of a 1200 with a screw in choke and not so good with a fixed choke ..
I was looking at a heavy duck model 12 with of course is a fixed full choke and was told it was not a problem too shoot steel out of it as long as you did not shoot real heavy shot like BB ,, But is that because it is full choke .. Or because it did not have a screw in choke ..

Neither, it's what the barrel is made of. As for using an old model 12 with steel shot, I'd be asking a smith, given the old guns were made for lead shot. I would not be shooting steel shot out of an old model 12. the 1200 and 1300 were made for steel shot.
