Does anyone know how long this calibre was offered in the Model 1895? I know it was introduced in 1898 but for how long? Were they made as long as the 1895 was made or was it discontinued after a few years?

Hard to say when the last .303 model 95 left the factory. I have seen a few that dated from the early 1920's and the model was discontinued in 1931. I have read that a few left the factory after that with final parts cleanup occurring in 1940 but I haven't had confirmation of that. They were popular in Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand due to the .303 chambering. I suspect Winchester did a production run of .311 barrels and assembled .303 British 95's until the barrels were used up. You might try the Winchester Collectors Forum and ask the members there what is the highest serial number they have seen for a .303 1895 rifle.

Thanks. I knew they discontinued the 38-72 and 40-72 after a few short years but I wasn't sure about the .303 British and some of the other calibres. Tried doing some internet searches but all they say is that 'it was introduced in 1898 in the Model 1895' but nowhere could I find if/when it was discontinued. Quite possible then it was made right up to the end of the Model 95 production. Thanks again.

I love my 303 Model 95 made in 1915. It will never be a collector piece but a rifle that feels just "right" when carrying it. It has lost about 60% of bluing but the bore is good. I plan to give it to my daughter for her next birthday, so shhh moms the word:)

Model 95 303

Considering the fact 290000 out of 425000 were 7.62 that does not leave a whole lot for a single caliber of the many that were offered.

Yeah, but they make up a definite minority on the ones you find here in North America. I'd say the most common here would be .30-40 Krag.

Mostly though I'm just making an excuse to post pictures of mine.

There were 2 different styles to this Musket, the Russian version (7.62MM) and the U.S.Government Musket (.30-40 Krag)
A quick way to tell the difference is that the Russian Musket has the ears added to the reciever for stripper clips.
