Hi CGN,

I have acquired this old 1895 from a family member. She's chambered for .30 US (.30-40 Krag).

I believe DOM is 1912 or 1913.

The bore is very good and the action cycles nice and smooth.

The rear sight might be an add on...desirable or not?

It looks like it's missing a top piece for the forearm.

Opinions? Info? Value?

Cheers,
Greg

I know nothing about it.... but opinion? ITS GORGEOUS. Rear sight is an add on but its an old one and is original to the gun. I have seen them before. I would say its desirable. Too bad the little screw is missing for the other sight and the sight itself perhaps.. i seen them both ways. Sweet gun though.

Worth finding a 95 handguard and carbine rear sight for. You have an 1895 saddle ring carbine. The aperture sight is a Lyman 21 AKA the "Climbin' Lyman". The sight is period and was available as a factory option. Date of manufacture probably too late for a Cody Firearms Museum letter confirming what configuration it left the factory in. The sight is worth around $300 in its present condition. If you cared to return it to original rear sight and handguard you could probably sell the peep to finance it. Nice old rifle. Value as is probably around $1000, give or take.

Hello,

I have attached a few photos to show what a high condition and correct rifle would look like for comparison. The Cody firearms ledgers only exist up to SN 59,999 which corresponds to mid 1907 production. The butt stock on your rifle has been heavily sanded and fits poorly. It should fit as the attached photos. The saddle ring is missing and a large screw put in its place on the left side. Because of the missing handgaurd, rear carbine sight, and the sanded wood I think $1000 would be absolute top dollar for the rifle.

I hope this helps
Michael

Thanks for posting photos Michael, that is always helpful for folks to see pics like that for comparison. I don't know that it would do $1000 up here. I sold one on CGN here a few years ago. It too was missing the handguard, but it did have the rear sight, sling ring was still there, had the Lyman 21 on it, was in 303 BR though and it did have a small hole in the buttstock where someone placed a sling eye once. The gun was in overall better condition though, wood finish very good, probably 70-75% original bluing, it sat here for sometime before I finally got around $700 for it. I think I had asked around a $1,000, but it didn't happen. These 95s are sometimes a hard sell, only exception being the 405s go quick. Had for of them, should have kept one, the TD rifle. Still kicking myself over that one, lol. I would like to find a deluxe 405 if I could, keep you eyes open for me!

Good photos, Michael. It is true that model 95's are the hardest sell of all the Winchester levers except the big bore like Matt said. If a quick sale were desired the OP rifle would be priced around $700. Many would buy it and part it out on Ebay or Gunbroker.
