I have a model 29 with a 6 and 3/8 in. barrel. I bought it off an old timer at a local club here in Winnipeg. I believe it to be a late 50`s production, it`s a 3 screw cover plate, has some holster wear at the muzzle but is very tight and has obviously seen few full bore loads. Can anyone out there give me an idea on it`s value? Thanks.

I'm guessing between $500 - $650
I guess it's value to the old timer, was what you paid.

It should have a 61/2 " bbl unless someone bubbaed it.
It should also have a recess where the case rims sit and a pin through the barrel and frame if it a 29 or 29-2,
The serial number will give the year of manufacture if you look it up in the S&W book.
I have seen 75 to 80% original 29s go for $800.00 to $1000.00 but they must be all original.
The later 29s were made when S&W was owned by Bangor Punta in South America, they "cheapened" these fine revolvers to make them more profitable. They did away with the recessed cylinder and pinned barrel, I think the blueing was not as good after the take over either.
Still decent shooting guns, many believe that the N frames were the best made revolvers S&W produced, they were the only 1s fully hand fitted.

knockknock, the changes to the Model 29s did not effect how they functioned, the changes only effected manufacturing cost. My M29-3 kicks just as hard as my M29-2 or M629-2. Regards, Richard :D

Absolutely true. The newer 1s function just as well maybe better in some respects, and slap the hand the same, but the collector value of the very early 1s is quite high. I have seen pinned barrel models sit beside newer ( 29-3 and up) and sell for more money. If it is just for shooting, it matters little , collectors however are a different lot.
