So I placed a want ad for a lightweight mountain rifle in one of your standard cartridges. While I still haven't found one that suits my needs, I have been offered a Remington Model 7. Or two. Or three. Actually, I have been emailed more about the Model 7s than all other gun possibilities combined. Holy ####. Is everyone that desperate to move them ?

I listed a few of the guns I wanted, some Rem 700s and a Ruger Compact and I did mention that I would look at other guns, but crikey, what's with everyone trying to unload a Model 7 ?

Short, handy, and under 7lbs scoped. Whats not to like?

Too bad they don't make them in stainless anymore...

The laminated blue .243 I offered might be lighter than a 700 mountain rifle, but the stock design is a club, so it feels more cumbersome to me. I would use it as a project action, but I've decided to build a .223 AI, so am offering the 7 up to finance a small bolt face adtion. I do think that a 7 sitting in a MacMillan edge classic w/ a 22" #2 barrel in 7mm-08 would be the cat's arse. That shorter action seems great- too bad they wrap it in a crappy handle.

What's not to like indeed? My model 7 in .300wsm and three of the seven groups I shot two days ago. And btw, the club like stock feels just right for the .300wsm.

I , for one like the 7.It's a short , handy little unit that is light to carry , and points naturally. If you look around, they're available in all kinds of calibers.
As was mentioned , the aftermarket isn't as abundant as it is for the 700, but they do make a nice carry rifle, especially if you hunt in thick cover.
I have a stainless synthetic, in .260, that I am trying to decide on for my carry rifle for the moose hunt this year. It'll be that or, my t3 in .338 fed, with my GG 45/70 riding in the back up slot.Or maybe the other way around , who knows:confused:.

I do really like the stock on my 673 in 300 saum- the geometry makes it point great, and it handles recoil really well.

Nothing wrong with Model Sevens..one of the nicest ones I had was a stainless barreled action in 300SAUM in a 673 stock.....weighed 8 lbs with a2.5-8X Leupy on top and handled really well....should have kept that one.

My latest Model Seven is an older one with the earlier ejection port with walnut schnabel foreend stock with a 22" 700 Mountain Rifle barrel in 257 Roberts..it awaiting reblueing...looks like it'll be a nice one....

I have always thought a M-7 would be a nice starter rifle for a kid, in .243 or 7-08. :)

I am one of the trolls that cannot get into short handy rifles. I prefer full-size and some meat to them. To me weight is secondary to the over-all length and balance, but then I don't hike up and down mountains. If I ever bothered to do some mountain hunting, it would be with my .30-06 for sure, since it is already a nice light rifle (according to me).

My .30-06 and .338WM that K&S Arms stocked for me weigh in around 7 lbs with full mags, my 602 weighs 10-1/2 lbs. My other M-700's with factory wood, generally are in the 8-1/2 lb range scoped and loaded.

I have hunted with a 12 lb Sendero and packed it all over the place one November; that is a bit on the heavy side.

My son's first rifle after the obvious .22LR will be a Model 7 in .243. You can get the combo package with a short and regular sized stock. Might as well start him off right.

bingo- I think I like the 673 stock more than almost any other stock from the major manufacturers.

I think the extra 2" would be a big help w/ shootability.
