Always have been a remington guy, now I'm considering a new winchester in 7mm-08 for my 13 yr old . Please give me your input on these new rifles . My last winchester was in the early 80's ( bad memories ) .

Thanks

they aren't that light by todays standards, probably hitting 8 pounds scoped and loaded.

Unless your son is a fairly husky 13 year old, a Remington model 7 is probably a better choice.

The Winchester Model 70 featherweight and Remington model 7 both weigh 6 1/2lbs.

I think a Model 70 featherweight in 7mm-08 would make a great firearm for a new hunter. Put a nice light scope on it and enjoy.

manufacturer specs aside, if you pick up a Model 7 in 7-08 with a wood stock, and a Model 70 FW in 7-08 with a wood stock, you will find the Remington a half pound lighter as well a a couple inches shorter, depending on which Model 7

He has a Rem model 7 in .243 now . He has taken a few nice mulies with it. But it has taken me 30 years to finally draw a moose tag and I would like my boy to harvest the animal with Dad as back up. As for a scope it will definitely be a VX-3 2.5X8X36. I am still cosidering another model 7 , love those rifles. Having alot trouble finding a place where we can handle both rifles side by side.

Get him the Mod. 70. A 270 with light bullets/loads will kill very well and you can turn it up as he gets more comfortable. There was a nice one at Wholesale in Langley just recently. $729. New Featherweight. I'm a Mod.70 guy and will never own another Remington but one of the nicest handling guns you can buy is the Mountain rifle. Back before I saw the light I had several.

I just bought a new FN Model 70 in 7-08. Rifle is a dandy, excellent trigger, lightweight (right aroung the 6.5 pounds as stated previously). This rifle is for my 12 year old daughter and she is not a husky one at all. I would definately recomend this rifle over the Remington.

I just bought a brand new M70 Featherweight in .270 from WSS and it is a thing of beauty. My hands are not as big as most, so the slimmer stock is perfect for me. The dark wood looks great and the trigger feels awesome. Did I mention it looks absolutely great? I can't speak for the Remington though, no experience.

If a new gun is in order,(and when is it not?:D) get the Model 70...I would,..and I have a safe full of 700's...

Model 70 Featherweight in 3006 . Mine must be 28 years old. Dead accurate and the freezer seems to get filled with moose. 180 grain Nosler partition. Does it every time.

Not one complaint. Will look at a 243 now as I don't own that caliber.

When my boy was young he started out with a model 70 lightweight in 270.

Doing it over I would have bought him a 7-08 or 308 in a light gun. Maybe Tikka T3 or 700 mountain rifle. The Featherweight looks great but isn't light. The thing with Brendan is he could deal with the recoil of the light gun, he couldn't handle a heavier rifle.

Just did that. No you won't. The Model 70 FW made now, is a way better rifle than the new Remingtons F&F being all criteria. And the shorter doesn't really matter; they are in the low 40" range.

Personally, i would go the model 70 route. The last 6 or 7 Rem 700's I bought were not as nice as the old ones. The 2 new FWT mod 70's I just bought are things of beauty. I agree to go with a 270 Win.

then Model Sevens are getting longer and fatter and Model 70 FW's are getting lighter and shorter.

The Model Sevens I've had were in the 37-1/2 inch range and barely over 6 lbs bare.

I've owned several FW's and none of them were under 6-3/4, and they are over 42" though these were all mid-90's Classics.
