And Oh Yes, I HAVE SEEN ... A FEW !!!!

No question there are several good custom smiths out there that can make yo up a beauty. First question ... how much do you want to spend on wood ???

Well, here's a piece of Circassian walnut that I got for less than $200.

Nicely figured and almost perfect grain flow through the pistol grip.

Wow Ted, that is a nice piece of wood! Did you get it a long time ago? Was it a blank or partly finished? I really like nice wood on a rifle, of a fine SxS shotgun.

Just off the phone with the Winchester Custom Shop ... your question in regards to a .358 Mod. 70 and various answers in response are largely academic anyways. No more orders being accepted. Work on existing Custom Shop orders proceding to and including all that can be finished and shipped until March 31st. Those with orders that can't be filled by that date will have their deposits refunded.

Off to the custom gunsmiths. Still looking for a supply of that
$ 200 grade Circassian walnut though. Anywhere else, one would pay large for that. Nice shape & finish.

Beretta Boy,

I guess what I've "READ" in Winchester's Catalogue is wrong too.

Gee, seems we can't all be right and all-knowing.

See p. 48 - 50 and especially the Headline on p.50 " A Krieger Barrel for Every Purpose ... the Winchester Custom Shop offers five different contours ..."

I stand corrected! :D

I just called them as well, to see if the Kreiger was standard or extra money above the $2762. Never did talk to the Custom Shop, as the lady who answered the phone told me the same thing, that they were not taking any more orders, and that Winchester was no longer going to be producing the Model 70 rifle. That, as you know, is old news.

She intimated to me, however, that Browning might be going to open a custom shop. That is new news. ;) Have you heard anything about that?

The wood was a semi-inletted blank that I got a few years ago to stock my Custom Model 98 in 270 Weatherby. You can still get wood of that quality for a bit more today. Certainly no more than $300 will buy you a mighty pretty piece of walnut.

Ted

When looking for semi-inletted blanks I go to
www.gunstocks.com

I have been satisfied with their product, but something like yours would be more than $300. Do you have a Canadian source? How about a picture of the entire rifle Ted?

Ted:

It is indeed a very pretty piece of Circassian, or as some call it " Turkish ".
Have a piece very similar in grain and over-all colours on my DT-10, but would like to get hold of a piece to re-stock a ribbed - Model 42 Winchester I have. Wenig( seemingly taken over from Fajen ) is definitely out to lunch with their prices for the really good stuff ... and have looked at a ton of it at Vandalia. I'll keep looking for a source though !

Browning runs a Custom Shop in Liege, but I suppose it wouldn't be a big stretch for them to do that for the American market here ... at the same time, I'd have to wonder "why" ...can't say I've sen as many Browning "customs " ( maybe 3 ) as I have Remington & Winchester ( 40 - 50 ) See lots of custom Berettas, Perazzi's, Kreighoff's & Kolar's though.
Some of the wood out of Beretta's Custom Shop in Brescia would knock your eyes.

As would their prices:eek:

Wooden stocks on hunting rifles seem to be going the way of the dodo in BC. I rarely see anyone with a nicely stocked rifle at the range or while hunting.

Thanks guys, some good contacts !

Those Beretta Custom Shop stocks/forends aren't as bad as you think.
Maybe $ 1200 ($US) for an almost fully inletted, nicely checkered, oil-finished stock & forend - ready to go ( just needs minor final fitting & butt treatment [pad] ) - for a 680 series O/U. Not many custom stockmakers will go that far for that kind of money ! About the same for an A- 391, but not that many want to spend big bucks on a gas pipe.
