Hi, I'm looking for a gunsmith to help me out with my pre 64 M70 rifle. I can't get it to group great and looking for someone to give it a good look over and whatever it needs to shoot a bit better. I don't know if the throat or barrel is gone, if my stock is putting uneven pressure on the barrel or what. I'm in Manitoba and willing to ship anywhere in Canada. Any names for guys who are proficient on working on the old Winchesters?

Cheers!

It would be a fair distance's but the guys at Corlanes in Dawson Creek are excellent gunsmiths & very good to deal with. But like I said that is a ways to go for yeah..
What cal is your model 70 ?? if you don't mind me asking ....

As old as it is, it really doesn't require a smith who is proficient on working on old Winchesters... old Winchesters usually are lever actions.

The Model 70 is a modern bolt action and any smith proficient with accuracy work on bolt actions should be able to help you.

The rifle is a 1952 in .220 swift with the factory stainless barrel. The rifling looks ok and I've got a crappy automotive borescope that is too large to see the throat. I picked it up a year or so ago. It needed a cleaning when I got it and I tried some of my handloads as well as factory hornady rounds in it. Groups are erratic. For the average 3 shot group, I'll get 2 holes decently close, then a flier a few inches off. Sometimes, the group isn't worth a turd. ~3-4".

I only use the term "old" winchester as most guys I hunt with have newer rifles and think that my rifles are old.

So then, maybe I'll change my question to looking for someone competent in accurizing my model 70.

Not surprised with the age & caliber as getting erratic groups, the old girl probably seen her share of fireworks in her day. But what a classic to re-barrel , I bet with a new after market barrel she is shooting little tiny cloverleafs again. I would recommend Corlanes, but that's just me. They have done a lot of work for me over the year's, but as Gunech has stated any gunsmith could do it for you. Hey wait a sec.... I heard that GunTech is pretty handy with this stuff, heard lots of positive remarks about the fella & his work...wink wink...maybe you could pm the gentleman. Or maybe even find a smith a little closer to your home.
And if you ever decide to part with the ole girl.. please let me know....I'm a model 70 freak LOL
Let us know how you make out....

Cheer's
