I have one of the new model 70's on order and looking ahead of time to figure out the mounting system. Trying to achieve a very low mount. Will mount a Leupold that has the standard ocular (not lightweight version). Not sure of the objective diameter yet. Would not exceed
40mm. I might look at mounting a leupold VXIII 2.5 x 8 which has a 36mm objective. Smallest objective I would consider would be from using a VXII 2 x 7 with a 33mm objective. Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions would be much appreciated. Looking to achieve a good cheek weld. cheers

I used a .375 M-70 with a 2.5-8X when I was in Africa a couple of years ago. I think the rings were mediums, as the bell was a half inch or so off the barrel. I think there is room for the low rings with that scope; however, the height of the scope must be compatable with the height of the comb. If I was you I would order a set of both ring heights and see which one gives you the better stock weld once your rifle arrives. It did seem to me at the time that the height of the scope made a very natural stock weld for me, but everyone is different, and your new M-70 may have slightly different stock lines than the older rifles.

I have Leupold Dual Dovetail Bases with Low Rings on 3 of my M70's. Largest Occular is 40mm and it fits with BC flip covers, it does have a featherweight barrel though. Cheek weld is perfect for me.

I have several Model 70 Featherweights and utilize various Tally, Leupold, Redfield (even Weaver!) low mount systems and they've all worked with plenty of objective bell clearance on my Leupolds. The largest objective I'll use on a hunting rifle is 40mm. I'll leave the 50mm stuff for target/varmint shooters and guys who put huge variable scopes with See-Thru mounts on their lever action .30-30's along with 3lb padded & tooled leather slings with spare ammo loops ("Eastern Specials"...ROFLMAO)

The lowest mount is probably the Weaver base and Weaver ring combo though the Burris extra low Zee ring is possibly even lower. Another contender, and a very nice mount, is the Conetrol low. Nice looking and very strong but semi-difficult to install. Everything else is a bit higher. If you are using a 40mm objective scope, the Weaver lows are probably too low unless the barrel is a featherweight contour. Regards, Bill.

You're not too far off on that one, except the boys are using Remington 7400s in 30/06 these days, complete with huge scope, see-thu rings and mondo sling. :puke:
