I notice Winchester is offering a 2010 SHOT show special, Model 70 Stealth in 223 Rem & 308 Win.

  • Barrel – Matte blued; Heavy contour; Target crown

I ordered one in 308 Win, who knows if I will get it or not since it's a short run.

Anybody have any experience with the previous generations of the M70 Stealth? It looks like it should be a good shooting rifle for the $$

thanks

I've owned both Stealth and StealthII in .308 Win and I loved them. :D I only have ONE regret and that's selling my 2005 Stealth II back in 2006 and I'm still kicking myself over that transaction.

They (the USRAC folks) really got things right with the StealthII since (just my 2 cents, being a Winnie lover) a one piece trigger guard / floorplate assembly was employed and now one only needs TWO allen screws to deal with and not the usual post-64 push feed 3 screw/2 pc. floorplate assy. Just my opinion....

The StealthII employed a Bell & Carlson stock instead of an H&S Precision factory baby. I'm liking both makers, but the B&C stock fit my medium sized hand perfectly. It also used the Controlled Round Push Feed method. I don't know if you Winnie M70 lovers like / prefer this arrangement, but it worked for my and my competitions. I'm a push feed lover, BTW, so please don't flame me! :sniper:

I'm so glad that FNHerstal USA is resurrecting / building this wonderful sniper rig once again! Great quality... hopefully a decent price point. BTW, this Short Action needs a WSM SA scope mount and I had super results with an EGW (Evolution Gun Works) Aluminum Picatinny rail from Brownells for around $ 50ish give or take. Mike at Allengunworks, a board sponsor carries EGW mounts. Not sure about his inventory!

Oh yeah, in the meantime, I'm still with a Winnie M70 Hvy Varmint Stainless rig that's also a tack driver (read: I cannot hold it steady enough on the bench, fzcking heart beats too much).... :D

x2!

I also have a Win Stealth II in .308 Win. I had it bedded and tuned by Rick at ATR where he also installed a custom bolt knob and muzzle brake. The rifle is such a joy to shoot and is incredibly accurate with Sierra's 168gr HPBT Matchking !

If you can get your hands on one don't hesitate!

I'm very happy that Hungry let that rifle go. I couldn't be happier with it. I did upgrade the stock to a McMillan A5 and did the normal bedding, trigger job, that most rifles benefit from. It's a great shooter with 155gr A-Max's.

I'm sure you will be happy with yours. I have another M70 set-up in a similar fashion in 223. I'm just waiting on a McMillan stock to come in for another M70 pushfeed that will be built into a 260.

I wish they come back ,like to get one in 308, Believe it had a 1-10 twist rate for the 30cal, Ten to be a litte better accuracy for 168grain, then the 1-12twist.

A ten twist barrel will be no more or less accurate than a twelve twist barrel, for .308/168s. Both are quick enough to stabilize the bullet (a thirteen is enough). Any difference in accuracy will be from individual barrel-to-barrel differences, not from having chosen a better twist rate..

1-10 twist seem to have 168, 175grain shoot more consistency than 1-12. did rebarrel an SPS to 1-12" heavy varmint, it did great up to and better than 1/2" but not very consist. still got the rifles, the only bullet it like is the 155grain BTHP Sierra(CONSIST), I am sure rnbra-shooter had great luck with 1-12, for 168/175:I wills stick to 1-10...

Hi, new here, How does this rifle compare to the Remington 700P (26" barrel)?
I am in the market, and have yet to see the Winchester. I hunt with a Mod. 70 Heavy barrel varmit in .308

I haven't handled the new 70 so keep this in mind.

Guessing the forend of the 70 won't be as wide/bulky as the 700P. 700 will have a parkerized finish. 70 will be (probably) a blued finish.

Not gonna comment on how they shoot because no one really knows. Remington can be hit or miss in accuracy. Winchester being a "new gun" again could have issues aswell.

FWIW...............

I've owned about 4 M700 Varmint .308's with the HS Precision stocks. I've owned 3 M700P's in both .308 and .223. Every single one of them would easily group into 3/4" as long as I do my part.

I've owned 2 Win M70 Hvy Varmints in both .223 and .308 (currently have one). I've also owned the Stealth circa 2000 and StealthII 2005 series USRAC mfg'ed and every single one of them hovered between 5/8" and 3/4" groups, outside 1" if I hurried like crazy (daylight disappearing).

I've been super happy with all these rifles. I am not a benchrester kinda guy who trims the inside and outside of my brass cases nor do I uniform my primer pockets and hand measure each powder load. So for practical accuracy (fishtailing winds at the NSCC National matches), all of these platforms do very well!

Your mileage may vary!

The forestock is as wide as on the 700P which I also have... BUT what I find a lot more comfortable about the stock on the Stealth II is that the palm swell is not as pronounced as on my 700P. I find it much more comfortable to grip and this comment has been made by several of the guys that have tried it as compared to their own 700P's in various configurations but in the OEM stock. Small hands, large hands it does not matter. They all found the palmswell on the Stealth much more comfortable than that of the 700P. The Remy seems to have an exaggerated swell that wants to sort of push your hand off of the stock.. or at least that's sort of what it feels like to me.

Regards,

she arrived today! Looks nice. 9.5 lbs unscoped

when $$ allows I will be looking for a scope. Plan is target shooting out to 600-800 yards. I'm a Leupold fan, suggestions?

I was thinking of a Mark4 6.5-20
