Thinking of having a rifle built on a Model 70 action. I know the Savages and Remington are the usual go to but I like the Model 70 type so I figure ill go that way.

One problem I have found is stocks, who makes a good stock for a Winchester 70? I would like something in a Varmit style layout, laminate would be nice as well.

Options?

Thanks.

McMillan makes....and the factory issued B&C (I think) that were nice. The older New Hampshire stainless varmints came with them, similar to the new Extreme Weather stocks in terms of build quality.

For a Model 70, I like the traditional "Marksman" style. To me, they just seem appropriate. Years ago, I bought some stocks from Richards Microfit which were not inletted so I could fit them to whatever and I used them for some Model 70's and an Enfield. I liked the result. I have also used a Marksman stock from MacMillan and still shoot that rifle for TR-O. This stock is OK but I find the comb to be a bit low. I've been going to put an adjustable comb on it but just have not gotten around to it. This is the one problem with the Marksman -style stock; the comb is never higher than the centerline of the bore and this is a bit low with a high-mounted scope. I've built a couple of removable combs on these but have not been perfectly satisfied with the result.

Very Nice, what is your set up? Also, how much did the build cost if I may ask?

New Haven CRF Action
26” Mike Rock heavy Palma 308
Insite heathen brake
McMillan A3G
PT&G bottom metal
Badger bolt knob
Kenyon trigger

A build like this paying full retail and commissioning all the gunsmithing would hit $3500 or so.

I put my stealth in to a Richardson micro fit and the final outcome was nice but way to much in letting was required for a proper fit. I still have the original b&C stock with the aluminum bedding block. It's rock solid and if you want it pm me and we can arrange a deal. (Cheap cheap cheap...its collecting dust I'd rather see some one put it to use)

rgv,

That is a beautiful rifle!
Big M70 fan.....my Stealth shoots incredible and is my favourite rifle of the herd!
Did you start with an A3G or get the stock separate?

It’s a parts gun. Those FNH overrun A3G stocks are on gunbroker all the time for $200-300

I have a Walnut insetted semi finished stock for a M 70. The frond is somewhat full (to allow shaping) but is not varmint config. Nice 2 tone contrasting wood. For a pre 64. Contact me if interested.

I went with a McMillan HTG in GAP Camo for my Model 70 dream rifle... Benchmark barrel from Gar Eakin the reamer guy...that sucker shot into 0.5” and was super sweet...

Enjoy the Model 70 project fun! I know I did and I’ll do it once again.

Cheers, Barney:wave:
