model 70 winchester bolt

this is a common problem in M70's. It's a problem between the camming surfaces of the cocking piece and the safety cam. It 's easy to fix but you have to dissassemble the firing pin mechanism....and if you file a bit too much the safety won't stay engaged properly. I've fixed a couple of my own and my brother's. Any gunsmith should be able to do it for you...heck...I did it, and I'm not even a gunsmith.......I don't even have a relative who's a gunsmith  but I can tell a file from a disc grinder

It is possible to fix this as Rembo described but a final test should be:

#### rifle
Engage safety
Pull trigger
Dis-engage safety

If the rifle 'fires' when you disengage the safety. or you wind up with a 'hair' trigger then the fix didn't work and has caused a bigger problem than you had when the safety simply didn't work. A better fix is to obtain a new, or after market, safety lever and replace the worn one. WGP should be able to help you out.............unless, of course, they won't sell one to a non-gunsmith......... which means that you have to go back to Rembo's suggestion that your gunsmith can fix it.

how do you take the bolt apart when I cannot put the saftey in the middle position, as shown and stated in the manual? am I setting myself up for more trouble than I have now.

remove the bolt from the rifle and hold the cocking piece in a vice with some paper over it to keep from marring it up. Pull on the shroud to move the cocking piece back so the safety can engage into the middle position. Remove from the vice and unscrew the firing pin/cocking piece/shroud assembly from the bolt.

Earl - I did some searching around in the dark and dusty corners and came up with a new safety lever. If it turns out that you will need one drop me a line.

thanks folks, will try the vice trick. if I need the saftey lever I will post my needs. thanks again. will keep ya all up to date on my progress. likely will be looking for more help.

folks I got the saftey to engage by lifting the bolt handle and working the saftey at the same time. but that is the only way I can get the safety to work. what do I now do to make it work in the was it was designed, any suggestions Rembo.

The safety stem has to engage the cocking piece, and cam it back, to disengage it from the sear. You have some wear, so that the safety can no longer engage the cocking piece easily. The assembly will have to be dismantled, and the camming surfaces adjusted so that the safety can engage the cocking piece properly. Usually it is necessary to alter the edge of the camming surface of the cocking piece slightly, so that the safety shank can act upon the cocking piece. Because dependable safety operation is critical, it might be better to take the rifle to someone who has corrected this problem before. This pattern of failure of M70 safeties is not at all uncommon. The safety itself is small, with small bearing surfaces, and often doesn't fit in the bolt plug all that well to begin with.
