I assume a model 700 short action with a .473" bolt face (22-250, 243, 7-08 etc) would be the proper donor for a 6br, and not a 223 bolt face??

:)

a 6br is essentially a shortened and necked 308, so yes.

In fact, the only 6mm that I can think of that needs a 223 boltface is the 6mm-223 (6x45) and 6x47 (6mm-222mag)

It will work fine, but you may have trouble feeding cartridges from the magazine unless you load them as far ahead as possible, if they are put in the magazine at the rear they may not get picked up reliably. Shorten the follower and bevel the rear end so the bolt will slide over it nicely without catching on it and make up a magazine spacer to fill the void and they will feed nicely without having to mess with the feed rails. you will have to get a shorter mag spring from a .223 mag so it can move ahead to sit squarly under the follower and keep the shells from going teter totter in the magazine and to accomidate the mag spacer.

I am doing just that.....Thanks for the tip on the magazine modifications. My .243 was just plain shot out. So it's off to become a 6mmBR Norma. I don't want to fart around with turning necks and such. Neck size, Prime, Dump Powder, Seat Bullets and GO. This projects has been gone for 11 weeknow so I'm still waiting. I have every component ready. I just need my new trued barrel and action back.

Can't wait.

Yeah, the POS was only shooting .75" dammit all! And I sure know that the guy can't wait to get his 6BR back. Every time he talks about it he's shaking like a virgin in a womens penitentiary with a bag full of pardons:p I think Barks is getting excited.

Who's doing the work?

Hope to have it ready for Listowel?

Are you and Chuck going?

RePete.

I'll let Barks do the bragging about his new toy, I know I'd want to if it was mine, but I'll speak up about Listowel. We're both hoping to go. Steve sometimes has a hard time getting time off of work and for me it is just a matter of whether or not finances will allow it. I bought a house in may and I'm doing a lot of renovation. I can hear a giant sucking sound from my bank account as money leaves faster than it enters. So Pete, are you hoping to be there?

Chuck

Have fun! I know plenty of excellent shooters that use nothing more than R700 actions and laugh at guys that blow huge amounts on customs actions.

Lots of BR users (including me) swear by a .272 neck (no-turn) lapua brass and leaving the flash holes alone. Makes for easy and consistent results.

This seems like a bit of a thread hi-jack but .....Re-Pete, Yes I hope to get to Listowell. As for the rifle. Rob McLennan is doing ALL the work. I'm told that his work is second to none, but you do have to wait. I honestly don't know if it will be ready for Listowell. Barrel will measure 26 inches long and .925 at the muzzle. 1:13 twist for 68 -74 grain FB bullets. I am having LEE build a set of custom collet dies for it when it's ready. Many people asked why I didn't go with a 6ppc. Basically because of the bolt face. The 700 fits perfect with no mods. The 6ppc uses a smaller bolt face. Tons of info on the 6BR and I think it will suit my purpose a little better. My original project was going to be a 30BR.
