I need another rifle! I am looking for an all round hunting rifle in 30-06 or 7mm mag for deer, moose and elk that can be my go to gun. I do a lot of hiking when I hunt and therefore want something light but don't need to get the stuffing kicked out of me either. I hunt in both heavy brush and open areas on the B.C. coast (where it rains sideways all day) and the interior (cold and dry).

I am seriosly considering the remington mountain rifle in the laminated and stainless. I am looking for some feedback regarding this rifle and some good alternative suggestions to consider.

if you're hunting in alot of bad conditions, consider the Remington M700 XCR in 30-06

the LSS is one sweet rig though, I sorta own one :)

For Serious nasty weather I'd go Synthetic over Laminate...while the Laminates are more "Resistant" to foul weather then Hardwood they still are not "weather Proof" like the Synthetics.
FWIW.....I now use a Remmie Titanium as my Knockabout rifle, it's a Great Lil gun for the Nasty weather and pretty light too;)

Thanks for the great suggestions and keep them coming,

I agree the .308 makes sense and is a great cartridge but I already have a .300 savage in a short action lever. I would like to go with a little more punch and flexibility in terms of bullet selection hence the 30-06 or more reach hence the 7mm mag. In terms of the Ti good suggestion but too rich for my blood. Synthetic or not? I don't care for the feel or look of synthetics but admit that they are likely tougher (although reading chuck hawks rifle stock article makes me have doubts). This rifle is a tool though so looks are out the window and are only a bonus if they happen to be there so I guess I should consider synthetics.

Again keep the suggestions coming

Well....If I were you, I'd buy this gun (in the 7mm): http://www.remington.com/products/f...fles/model_seven/model_seven_magnum_specs.asp

Then I'd buy the Factory laminate stock Rembo has for sale in the EE....put them together......voila!

I actually have a model 7 laminate in 300 SAUM, and I really couldn't be happier with it! Comparing it to my 700's (LSS in 300 ultramag and the MTN LSS in 7/08) I dont see much of a difference.

Also, Epps has a case of factory ammo for sale cheap! (nosler partitions, 22 bucks a box)

When you say much of a difference you can't mean recoil? I'll have to think about this carefully I don't know uch about the saum cartridges?

The recoil from the 7mm SAUM is equal to or less than that of a 30/06, yet gives the performance of the 7mm remington mag. It uses a short fat cse instead of a long thin one, so it uses a short action. As far as the model seven rifle goes....think of it as a 700 on a "diet". It works perfect as a "working" rifle.

In this pic, the model 7 is the third one down. Compare it to the MTN at the top.

I have the m700 mountain LSS in. 30-06. I absolutely love it. i was also a bit concerned over recoil but it really is not bad at all. Good luck with yor choice, any of the ones mentioned above would fit the bill nicely.

Is the thickness of the barrel on the mountain rifle a concern? I want this gun to last and I have heard the barrels are paper thin and heat up fast? I am wondering if the weight reduction from the regular LSS is worth it because of this point?

the mountain rifle is not meant to be a range gun, its meant to hunt, and hunt hard

if you're gonna be blasting alot of rounds downrange in a short period of time, you're better off with a SKS, not sure if they come in laminate versions though.

the mtn rifle has a slim barrel, and slender stock. its meant to be carried alot more than it is to be shot. not that they arent accurate...all three mtn rifles Ive owned have shot under 1" with handloads without much time spent on load development.

I have a blued 30-06 Mtn Rifle in a laminated stock.

It's very accurate and quick handling. As bartell mentioned, it's not a range gun really... the 4th and 5th shots of a group are almost always wider than the first 3, and the first 2 are usually within 1/2" or touching on a good day by me.

Everyone percieves recoil differently; I prefer 180gr bullets, and I had to put a limbsaver on mine. Now it's no problem at all. I love mine.
