Hello:

I am trying to plan my next rifle purchase and was thinking of getting a Model 700 SPS Tactical in .308 (http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-sps-tactical.aspx). This rifle would be mostly used for target shooting and perhaps the odd coyote hunt.

This would be my first Remington 700 (I have a few Savage rifles in .223 and I figure everyone needs at least one 700 and one .308 in their collection) I really have two questions regarding this rifle.

1. Would the hinged floorplate magazine of this particular model allow me to easily upgrade the stock to a higher quality after market stock down the road?

2. Would the hinged floorplate magazine of this particular model allow me to easily convert this rifle to a detachable box magazine down the road (i.e. H-S Precision) if I decided that I wanted to do that?

I guess I just don't want to be limited in my options with this rifle. Not that I want to make these changes right away; I just want to have the most flexibility and options in the future.

I am just not familiar with the hinged floorplate magazine system as all of my existing rifles have either hidden blind magazines or detachable magazines and I might shy away from this system if it were going to limit the potential "build" potential of this rifle.

Sorry for the newbie questions and thank you in advance for your time and comments.

Regards,

Chizzy

Hello:

Absolutely! I've used a B&C stock (which Remington themselves use on a couple models don't forget!). I've also used the Choate.

2. Would the hinged floorplate magazine of this particular model allow me to easily convert this rifle to a detachable box magazine down the road (i.e. H-S Precision) if I decided that I wanted to do that?

Yes, I did just that with a B&C stock. I bought both the stock and DM from Stocky's in the States. The DM's are NOT cheap man. Frankly I regret the purchase as the money could have been better used in a barrel or trigger.

I guess I just don't want to be limited in my options with this rifle. Not that I want to make these changes right away; I just want to have the most flexibility and options in the future.

The 700 is arguably one of the most upgradeable rifles in the world. There is NO limitations to what can be done on a 700.

Hope this helps.

Sure thing, you will be able to upgrade the stock into several stronger (and more expensive) options. That is the fun of the M700 platform. I've got 2 of them and I love swapping the stocks around.

IIRC, the HS Precision DBM upgrade will not require machining out of the magazine well area. That should be a straight swap. Other conversions such as the VBull Precision option and the model sold by Reliable Tackle in Gangcouver DO require some machining out of the same magazine well. From all sorts of reports on this forum, all these options work well. :D

Have lots of fun with the Remmy M700!

I got one last year Chizzy. I thought I would do all that upgrading but I ended up putting it on ammo and trigger time to get good with the rifle. The hogue sticky rubbery stock I thought in the beginning was ugly and useless. BUT, after experimenting with it on improvised urban rests of non-prone positions, it's sticky compound really helped holding on to objects. It's like using the rubber sticky gloves for target shooting but already on the stock. Just my thoughts...:).
