Near my still.
It looks like I won't ever need to start a thread about 3006,308 or a variety of 7mm but I do have some questions about a rifle.

Win Mod 71.
What is a decent one worth?
.348 brass(availability) and ballistics?
How do these guns typically shoot?

You will probably get plenty of opinions on value, but like most other rifles worth only what someone will pay for it...maybe a thousand and up depending on model and of course condition.
Mine is a Deluxe in mint condition, shoots well, groups most handloads about
2 inches or less....sometimes more depending on the bullet.
Others may argue with me but I think its a 200 yd. and under rifle.
I haven't found brass hard to obtain, and bullets are still available from several sources...Hornady and Barnes to name a couple.
Mine works well with cast bullets, but have only killed animals with jacketed loads and with a 250 gr bullet it is definitely a hard hitter...on both ends !

They are a beautiful rifle to carry...well balanced and very smooth...

Heyyyyyyyyy, now we're cookin' with gas! My favorite lever gun/caliber combination and I've just recently picked one up at a gun show in Duncan, actually two shows ago now. This one, a deluxe, is the second as I foolishly got rid of the 1st.

Even though there weren't many made there are a few variations, the two basic ones are two models, one being a 'plain jane' and the other a deluxe. A guess at the price if you come across one, the pj may run about $1600.oo and the deluxe $2600.oo.

Brass availability, you see the odd bit but it is around. I've picked up 3 bags of 50, new unprimed W-W @ P&d, another bag from a friend as well as 6 boxes of 20 W-W at the last Duncan show. It is around but it is also used by some to make up some specialty 'stuff'.

Bullets, the same sort of deal. Hornady makes a 200grFP and I picked up 3 boxes @ P&d and I made arrangements for an additional 2 boxes of 220gr Barnes Originals and 1 box of 250gr Barnes originals. Also a friend locally, who also has one, casts and I get a 230grGC & a 262grGC variety from him. So, I'm good to go for a while. Got to get the goodies when the getting is good.

As far as shooting and accuracy is concerned, I've shot a very few targets before the recent bad weather arrived but it looks great with those preliminary 'tests'. I'll tell you more before too long. A few info articles you may find of interest;
- Classic Rifles - Winchester Model 71 by Ken Waters, Sept./Oct. 1976 issue of Rifle Magazine.
- The Model 71 Winchester and The 348 Cartridge, on the www.leverguns.com website.
- Two articles by Dave Scovill, (1)The Model 71 Winchester, Sept.-Oct. 2007 issue of The Rifleman Magazine. (2)Winchester Model 71, which deals with the introduction of the Browning reproduction of the 71, Jan. 2000 from The Legacy of Lever*Guns. www.riflemagazine.com

Yep Nice. Essentially just a Model 1886.

The 348 is a Legendary cartridge that has proven it's worth...especially up North where the 71 and 348 cartridge are still VERY popular and for good reason

Thanks for the links Johnn

Great rifle and cartridge.I have one that shoots very well.A number of years ago Browning manufactured a carbine and rifle version of the Winchester Model 71 .348.

Wish I had one, if that tells you anything.

Well....it tells me you don't have one, but keep lookin cause they turn up in unexpected places.

My next door neighbor had one.... I lived beside him for 10 years before I found out and that was only because he offered to sell it.
I bought it, gave it to my brother for his birthday 5 or 6 yrs. ago. :)

Long-time gunnut bud converted his 71 in 348 to 450 Alaskan back in the 70's.
Lot of impact for Bullwinkle. I used it once for deer. Authoritative in 450 A. :D

There's a couple of conversion that look interesting and I wouldn't mind having down the road. I think that's why the Browning copy of the 71 was brought about, so I wouldn't have to 'bubba' a 'real' one.:p

NEI Handtools makes moulds in that weight range. Mine drops them at about 267 with lube and gas check installed. I like NEI moulds although I have heard some detractors recently. I have several bought over the last 5 years and they all cast very nice bullets.

Ike, I got to shoot one last spring and it was sweet! I have some brass if you need a few. I reform them for the 41 Swiss. I can steer you toward some more if any are left too.
Ballistics are typical lever gun from that era. It would take care of that Black bear this spring if you can find him.

Great firearm, great cartridge. A rimmed .358 Winchester, plus a bit more. Brass is kicking around a plenty, but bullet choice is somewhat limited given the unique bore diameter. If you pass up the deal, I'll take it.

Just happen to have one of those.
You could almost say there were 4 models.
As very early ones both rifle & carbine were Long Tangs.
Ballistics don't look that impressive but it does it's job.
Kicks on both ends with 250gns.

This is a minty 2nd year production Long Tang Deluxe, I wish I had better pics.
