Hey i wanted to get a red dot sight for my Maverick Model 88 security, but it does not look like it's able to have a sight mounted to it. would it have to be gunsmithed or is there sights made for it?
The model 500 recievers are drilled and tapped at the factory for a weaver base. I'm not sure if that is the case with the 88's or not. If it is. its an easy do it yourself job to install the mount.
My Mav 88 isn't drilled either. I do have a saddle mount from Millet. Works very good. I thought about drilling the reciever, but it is made of aluminum and it doesn't look like there would be more than 1-2 threads holding the base on. Not solid enough for me, but someone chirp in if I'm wrong.
To the best of my Knowledge Maverick didn't drill the receiver tops for scope mounts... it can be done if you want to go that route, but I'd let a gunsmith do it.
I was under the impression that the reciever on the Mav 88's was thinner & lighter than the Mossy 500's (probably a good thing if you're hauling your shotgun around all day!), which makes it less desirable to drill & tap Maverick recievers? I don't own one, so I can't really comment. The B-square or Millet saddle mounts look more than solid enough though, and they're reasonably priced. I'd go that route, if I were a Maverick owner
hmmmm i may have to look into the millet mount. it's just a cheap shotgun that i bought to play around with, i'm not a serious hunter or anything, but i would like a few toys for it when i'm out after those evil gophers
Poweredbybeer makes a good point, looking at my Mav 88 while we have our nightly talk about the bad people in the world (kidding), I'd go with a B-square, or millet saddle mount.

is it just me or does that one for the mossberg 500 look like it's attached to the gun through the pin hole for the trigger housing? and for $50 US that seems like an average price for a mount.
You got it Retro Steve. It attatches by the trigger pin and a screw through the left side of the reciever. Very solid mount. It takes recoil very well. Unfortunately my scope didn't.
may have to pick one of those up then i just want a solid red dot sight on it, maybe throw on a flashlight and a couple other toys that would make any liberal #### themselves at the sight of it.
