I have one in 307 that never gets used as ammunition is scarce including virgin cases. I was thinking of re-barreling to 458 X 2" American. Have any of you out there done this and if so what troubles should I watch out for? What would be the approximate cost? Who would you recommend as the smith?

Load 308 brass. Same cartridge and the extractor should work.

Factory ammo would be too long to run thru the magazine.

Don't load 308 cases ! bad move there the 307 factory brass has a lip like a 30/30 case and also the 307 case is thicker then the 308 brass even though it appears to be the same ... I reload 307 brass all the time with no issues .

Finding 307 brass is the issue.
Making 458x2" brass is no issue. And it is an over 40 cal lever action rifle. To some that is desirable.
Like me.

They are not exactly the same. There may be an issue with the extractor, and with my luck there will be an issue. Murphy lives under my porch.

Why not sell it and buy a BLR in 308?

.307 brass is not that hard to locate... neither is the ammo.... certainly easier and cheaper than a .458X2" conversion... even if you could find someone to take that project... and if you do find someone to do it, you would be creating a gun that nobody other than yourself would want... which means on top of the cost to rebarrel, you are also loosing any value in the rifle... you might as well sell it and buy something else that you want... a far better route.

However, if you just gotta... scratch that itch...

I've cycled empty .308 cases through my brother's .307 with no problems, just curious to see if it would work. I didn't try live fire, which might make a difference with extraction given the case expansion. Factory .308 ammo is too long to cycle, as mentioned above.

The thing is, it is a safe queen the way it is now. My hunting here involves 3-400 yards on many occasions and very few under 100 yards.
I like the over forty levers just for fun, but the 94 in 30-30 is enough on that platform. 25-35 would be better if I wanted to stretch it out a little.
Maybe a re-barrel in 25-307?
See, this is what happens when you have too much time on your hands!

Had one in 375win. Shot my first moose with it. Hit the last rib on the left side, went through both lungs, caught the leading edge of the front shoulder on the right side, then rolled along under the hide, coming to rest under the hide, half way up the neck. Expanded to 55cal. Goes to show how effective slow, heavy bullets can be.

I wouldn't even consider the swap. You'll pay a small fortune to accomplish what 5 minutes and $650 on the EE could. And to what end? To have a frankenrifle that probably won't function particularly well? Sell the 307 and buy a JM Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. No fooling around making brass, just load and shoot.
