model 94 winchester and scopes

I would appreciate a little input on "resighting" my model 94 top ejection rifle. I understand that the only work around for a scope is a side mount that really wrecks the appearance. I have been told that a good alternative to improve accuracy is to place lyman or williams sights.
Does anyone have experience in doing this?

I was given a 94 with side mounted scope. Ripped the thing off before firing a shot and put a receiver sight on.

The gun is not a good shooter though, and I can't get good very groups no matter what ammo I use, but sighting is easy, you don't have to hold your head off the stock, wobbling around trying to hold the crosshairs straight.
