I need to clean up the threads on a M96 for the rear guard screw and am having a heck of a time finding the correct tap size to chase the threads with.
Does anyone know what size they taped the rear tang for the guard screw on the Mauser 96's ? and where to order a tap ?

You are looking for 1/4" x 22 threads per inch, originally with 55 degree (Whitworth) pitch. Closest that I have ever found is through Brownell's 1/4"x22 tpi 60 degree pitch.

A second thought - if you have spare mauser action screws, you might be able to cut a notch in the end of one and make it work as a tap to clean up the messed up threads.

Just came upstairs from doing this. I tapered the screw a couple threads and gently worked it thru from the top side. I/4 turn at a time and lots of lube. Tedious but effective. After getting the tapered screw in from the top A worked a normal screw in from the top to clear up the last couple threads on the bottom side.
It's all good now and back together.
